Need someone to tell me they have had more injuries through horse riding than me. I have just had my third broken arm from falling off and I am seriously thinking this is a sign to give up riding. Has anyone had any more injuries than me. On a serious downer at the moment x

Oh poor you. Hope you aren't in too much discomfort.
Sorry, can't reassure you about the injury think as I've had one fall in two years and that did result in a broken collarbone and bruised ribs. I'm convinced that falling off = Breaking
Get well soon and I seem to remember from a previous thread that there are some members with very impressive lists of breakages and injuries. :)

oh deary me maybe a big roll of bubble wrap or a stunt riding course on how to fall is in order lol . i have to say there is no way ,no matter what happened or how badly i was hurt ( and boy have there been some spectacular ones) i would NEVER give up horses! chin up and get better soon:)

Havent really hurt myself falling off but has had some terrific falls off just about every horse I have ever sat on and only now at nearly 60 struggling with aches pains and the resultant damage I do know of a young lass that has had 4 broken legs and 6 broken arms in her short life and I think she is only just learning to ride so it isnt the horses that do it and no she is hasnt got brittle bone disease or any other form of bone disorder she just seems to be very unlucky in the way she falls
I broke my arm at work and my leg when my git of a pony gelding dragged me in an electric fence, We have a love hate relationship he is the most aggressive naughty pony I have ever met he will cuddle with you one minute and kick your head in the next hence him being a millstone round my neck with only a bullet at the end of his stay with me. Still he is a very beautiful and sometimes loving millstone so I will defer the bullet a bit longer

I have broken various fingers and toes my foot once back twice first one does not count because I did not know I had done it.my hip and my leg so badly it took nearly five years of surgerys to fix it .
Not sure if my tale is encouraging but only one of my accidents has been doing something exciting my first back injury out hunting the rest have been really silly things.
I just keep plugging on I am a bit battered now .

I think most (if not all) of my physical injuries since 1994 were as a result of horse riding. The followings are some of the more serious ones:

Fell off a galloping horse up in the mountain and bruised one of my kidneys (There were blood in my urine some days later and scared the hell out of me!!!)
Tried to jump with no reins and broke my back. Spent 2 weeks in hospital in the wrong ward. For some reasons the fracture didn't show on x-ray and had to wait for MRI as in-patient!!!
Something spooked a point-to-pointer on the beach and fell off twice. Got kicked in the stomach in the process. Walked for 2 hours to get back to the stables. Some days later, my abdomen displayed an array of colours: yellow, blue, red, purple...
Fell off and fractured my back for the second time. This time it got picked up by the x-ray. Had to wear an aluminium frame for 6 weeks plus physio...

The funny thing is that I am still riding. I have just ridden today (well actually yesterday)...

Oh dear what were you doing at the time?

Methinks you need a more secure seat Jake. Have you been lunged with no stirrups or reins?

Since I've been back into horses, which is about seven years I think, I've:

Fallen off the 13.3hh before I'd actually got on (it was one of those comedy moments :rolleyes::eek:) and couldn't walk properly for two weeks;

My 16.3hh slipped on the road and we both hit the ground. I cracked an elbow;

Same horse. Fast canter. Messing around (me!). Horse went left and I didn't . Hit the ground in poor fashion and bashed my head. Was wearing a hat so got away with a bleed on the brain

Same horse a year later. Jumping when I was ill . Came off at the apex of the third part of a grid. Landed on my feet. Compression fracture at L2.

Got to love that horse. She went through an arsey phase. Went to kick/bite me. I shot backwards, tripped, turned, fell on my right wrist. Broke it. Had it plated the next day. Have now lost the horse (on-going lameness that couldn't be fixed no matter how much time and money we spent). Still have the scar.

Ribs collar bone wrist fingers and toes cheek bone ligament in foot muscle in shoulder and soo many concussions

Still, I got whiplash driving and broke my arm at a picnic, life just is dangerous sometimes and I dont like knitting.

Oh where to begin.... Princess Anne once said "if you get on a horse, you have to expect to fall off at some point and damage yourself"
Over the years i have broken fingers, toes, compound fracture in lower leg, resulting in pins, plates, muscle transplant and skin graft, wrist resulting in pins & plates, neck vertabrea fused with metal cage. Yes i have lost and to a degree regained my confidence, i still ride and i still love it. The thing is we just don't bounce as well as we did when we were younger!

I do know of a young lass that has had 4 broken legs and 6 broken arms

:eek::eek: how the hell does she ride with 4 legs and 6 arms???:eek::eek:

Sorry, couldn't resist...that just put the most bizarre picture in my head.

OP...sorry, I have fallen off probably over a thousand times as started riding at 4 and used to fall probably 5-10 times a week as a kid as used to back and break youngsters and my own pony was a bucking pro! I had about the scariest fall two weeks ago today and my youngster reared up and over and landed all 500+kgs on top of me on the road. I didn't break anything...I am either very very lucky or have extremely strong bones.

Or, it could be that I was taught as a kid to roll into a ball. I do it instinctively to protect my organs and so far, I have been ok.

I will also add, even when I was told last week that I had broken my back and pelvis, I still was asking about how long before I could get back on.

I think for some, it is just in your blood and no amount of injury will stop you.

Don't get too hung up on it though OP...we all fall off. Breaks can be par for the course, but not always.

is there not a 'safer' way to fall off? :o
I remember reading about it on here a while back.

it's always the silly falls that hurt the most. I've been relatively lucky - in 12 years I've broken my arm and my leg but the leg was my fault (jumped off when horse started to bronk and landed on my feet).
I walked away from the worst fall with minor bruising - I was lucky not to seriously hurt myself.

It's all part of riding but there comes a point when you have to figure out what's causing you to fall off so frequently. I know I certainly did after I came off three times in two consecutive lessons. :o

The first two times were years ago when I was 11 and then 12 on my bucking bronco pony. Now ten years later and it was a bit of a freak accident. My horse is relatively green, mistimed the jump, I landed with a thud on top of him and he panicked. Shot off in a panick, span at the sandschool fence and i went straight into the fence :( x

Fractured spine, skull, arms, legs... And I don't even ride anything dangerous (any more...)

Then again, last night I managed to fracture my ankle while walking down the street, so I am, apparently, extremely breakable...
