Hello All,

Firstly, I'd like to apologise for how rarely I come here (and then barging along begging for help). I have no excuses..

MrsMozart suggested that I ask on here for work experience (vet university) as we live in an area with very few sheep and I really need to find some lambing work. I've had little luck so far (one herd with a willing farmer, but only 30 sheep). If any one can help at all, I shall be forever grateful.

Cookies and hot chocolate to anyone who helps. :) :) :)

(This is also on Careers and Education, Veterinary and Soapbox)

You don't need lambing to get into vet med - it really isn't as hard as everyone makes out  I really wouldn't worry about it :)

You may want to resize your enormous sig before someone reports it...

Does the smaller local sheep farmer know of any larger places further afield? I got my first year lambing placement via a local farmer who was lambing at the wrong time for me but knew of a large place that took vet students for lambing. Also, do you know any local vet students who might be able to pass on details of their placements? Another tip is to google 'lambing assistant required', these ads usual want experienced lambers but you could ring up and explain you want unpaid work ex.

Finally, if all else fails put on your personal statement that you have lambing lined up for next year! I did this (never actually did any in the end ;-) )and got into 3 of my 4 choices, including Liverpool which is the strictest on work ex. Everywhere around me lambs in January, so I was at college, and my Easter hols were filled with vet work ex.

JTFD - visited lots of vet schools and they all ask for lambing . Good point re. siggie, ta :D

I never lambed and I got into 3 - if you can get some, grand, but if you can't, and have everything else covered, I really wouldn't stress about it :)

I love Liverpool :P

Nice one, JFTD. Where are you now?
What other work experience did you have?

No, Murphy88. He suggested a website but didn't know of anyone. The website hasn't been any use :(
I shall try that now. :)
Ha, I've heard of that working for people. They were quizzed for ten minutes before the interviewer believed them, but it worked. :P

Liverpool is obviously the best ;-) I wasn't asked at all about lambing, but I guess it is different for everyone, and my interviews were 6 years ago!

I will send you a PM with a couple of other ideas.

I'm not a vet, but I went to the RVC, ended up doing a PhD instead

Off the top of my head - small animal vets, equine vets (lots of the former, a few weeks of the latter), week on a massive dairy farm including a few surgeries, a couple of weeks on a pig farm, week at an equine unit of ag college, couple of weeks with exotic/random small animal husbandry, day at an abattoir, limited sheep handling and about 9 weeks at a pharma company doing research. I also told them all I didn't want to be a vet and they still let me in. The only reason Bristol rejected me is that I told them at the interview I already had a low offer from the RVC and I wouldn't hesitate to accept it over Bristol anyway (the arrogance of youth).

Ultimately I'm saying that, provided you jump through most of the hoops and -most importantly - apply yourself at school and get TOP grades, you shouldn't have a problem ;) It is very over-subscribed, but mostly by no-hopers who aren't going to make the grades - or haven't bothered to do the most basic work experience
