People are always posting about working and getting dogs, I know the jury seems to be out on this one, so would like to see how many of us actually work full time and still have dogs.

My dogs are used to being left while I am at work....doesn't mean I feel good about doing it though

Mind you I even feel guilty when I sit upstairs to use the PC in the evening and they are downstairs asleep on the sofa

This is interesting AmyMay you have a horse, yet work full time. You keep the animal in a herd which fulfils its need to have company, why not get two dogs and then you will be fulfilling their need to have company?
After all the dont NEED human company.

But in all seriousness - I really just don't think it's fair.

I leave the house at7.30am and don't get back till 6.00 - later obviously when I ride.

I know that some people work full time, and keep dogs successfully. It's just not for me I'm afraid. I just don't think it's fair.

Not judging others, just not something I could do.

I suppose that is what it comes down to isnt it? Wether you want to or not. You'd have a lovely home for a dog so hopefully you'll be able to one day - even though the cats would dissaprove!

Oh, I'm planning on winning millions on the lottery this weekend - so work will soon be a distant and dim memory...................

I have 2 dogs & work full time.
They go out for a wee at 6am then I leave, return at 8am to take them up the hill to do everything. Then back in I get washed changed for work luckily office is only a mile away for me! So in work at 9 have my lunch break at 1.30pm (only have 30min) to come back & take my young dog out for a wee. I only take young dog out as she won't go to the toilet for anyone else which is highly annoying. Also my Father lives with us as he's not well & has adopted my old dog & he takes he out for lots of wanders through out the day! Then back in work till 5 then I take them up the fields to tire them out together.
Many atime Dad has said he thought I had aken them with me as he had not seen them they have been fast a sleep in the house! So they can't be that distrought!

When I got young dog she came with me to work & slept under my desk all day & I thought it was worse then being left at home as she couldn't wander round.

We've got two dogs - one comes to work with me, the other with my OH so they only really get left for food shopping etc

I work full time and have 5 dogs, I am fortunate enough to still live at home and therefore my mum is at home nearly all day, I would have help if I didn't live at home. I am usually home for the morning or the evening as have morning and night shifts.

I personally don't think it's fair to leave a dog on its own all day but it's not as bad if they have other canine company, better still if someone can pop round and let them out for a wee at lunch

I try to walk them every day or at least take them down the stables with me

I mostly work from home, but on the days when I'm in the office, like today, Stella goes to doggie daycare, to hang out with a pack of dogs, a bucketload of toys and a handler who dotes on her.

My dogs spend the day at the yard where I keep Marnie, I take them down there when I go to muck out in the morning, and one of the Yard Managers drops them back home and pops them in their crate when she comes home in the evening - she lives opposite me. They spend the day in a run, coming out when the other dogs do. At weekends they spend all day with me.

Chimo spends the day at home. she has never known any different. she gets a walk in the morning, we come home ant lunch and they are usually either home in the evening or she comes out with us. when we are home at the weekend, or on holiday she just sleeps all the time so does not miss us during the day!

I work full time but can pop back to feed and let them out most days, when I can't I get a neighbour to do it and they get a good long walk at the beginning and end of the day so they're fine but I do feel guilty and would prefer to be at home with them all day. That's life I guess.

I'm soon going to have start working longer days so am advertising for someone to come and feed and let them out for a play for 1/2 an hour a day. What do people think I should pay?

Well as I still live at home and my mum doesn't work then the dogs have her to amuse them all day. But if I didn't live at home or if my mum worked, I am lucky that I can take the dogs to work if I wanted to, but not sure if I can subject them to the children.

Our dogs are used to it. They are alone from 8.30am 'til 3.20pm, but they don't seem to suffer any ill effects from it. I would love to stay at home all day, but that is just not an option. Ours do have to separated during the day as the smaller dog (my mum's) is vicious with my dog. The whole point of having two was so that they would keep each other company, but that backfired. I'm now having to consider getting a third dog (which I wasn't planning on) to keep my girl company - she loves other dogs so it's a shame that she can't spend the day with one.

I work full time and OH works full time but he works from home at least 3 days a week, on the days he has to go in, we take them for a walk before, my mum normally comes and walks them a lunch time and then we take them out again when we get back.

On the odd occasion - once a fortnight maybe, they have to stay on there own from around 8.30 - 5.30. We used to crate them because Star was a total nightmare when we first got her and leaving them in there for that long made me feel awful.

Luckily they behave (ish) now so we can leave them with the run of the house.

I wouldn't be totally happy leaving them all day 5 days a week, BUT they have each other to play with and they wouldn't be doing anything exciting if Dan was working at home..

When I am at home I spend quality time with my dogs, they get long walks and plenty of interaction. They have the run of the house and garden in my absence and each other for company. (Some people put theirs in cages!!!!!)

Occasionally if I have to work overtime they come into my office with me, though I have to put up a note for people to knock first!!!

I find once in their routine they are very happy with it. Typical day, AM long walk, do horses daytime sleep, occasional excuse to bark at Postman and anyone who dares to come on the drive. PM Long Walk and more horses, out for a ride or help with schooling!, home tea and more sleep. If I am on holiday or work from home they still sleep all day!

I don't go away on holiday I spend it with them and the horses. One is right now upside down on the sofa snoring! I don't think it's a bad life and one of mine has been totally screwed up by a non working home, I don't think anyone else would have persevered with him, through some pretty scary aggression. His alternative would have been DEATH, ask him what he would prefer!!!

I believe a home should be judged on its interaction and quality time spent with a dog not how long a person works for, it is ludicrous to think that there are enough people out there who do not have young children, do not work and have the inclination to cope with all these dogs with problems created by stupid humans, many of whom don’t work!

I do feel guilty about working but he sleeps when we are at work and when we are home he gets plenty of ball play and runs.

I'm still considering getting another ESS so to keep him company as his only company at the mo is an old cat with dementia who meows constantly
