I want to work in a horse racing yard as a stable lass but
I have only just started riding very recently and have a had a couple of lessons

I was thinking of going to the northern racing college or the British racing school

do you have to be a good rider to go to these colleges and get a job or will I be ok not being a very good rider ?

Hey, welcome!

I wasn't going to reply as to be honest I don't know the real answer too your question however...
I have worked in racing for a few years and love it I don't ride out but have done and its very different to normal riding (muscles amongst other things, it hurts at first!)
Id say simply because a fit young TB is a different kettle or fish to your average RS horse that you do need to ride to a decent standard first- My yard would certainly only let experienced riders ride the horses.
I have friends who have been to Racing school, most came form a pony racing back ground and were riding out at p2p yards etc from a silly age and have no fear.
I have another friend who is going this year and she only has riding school experience. I asked her if this worried her and she said that the racing school brochure states "riders of all abilities" so maybe you can go?
The best thing id imagine is to contact a Racing school and ask for advice.
Good luck I hope it all works out for you

Go to Newmarket! Its good fun but hard work! The racing schools will take on people that have never even seen a horse in the flesh let alone sat on one. Everyone starts from scratch there no matter your abilities and you basically learn to ride from scratch. At the end of the 9week course they will garuntee a job in a racing yard - its uo to you to graft hard enough to keep that job!

Be prepared for blood, sweat and tears but it will be worth it at the end of the day! Not many people make it for the duration of the course, about 1/2-2/3's of starters because it is rough and usually its peoples first time away from home and 9weeks is a long time if you don't have the grit and determination!

Definitely look into it as racing is one of the most fulfilling jobs you can do!

I've no idea about the racing college side of things... I just kind of stumbled into a job on a NH yard and it was the best job I've ever had, so much fun. I could ride when I started there but had never been near a race horse before but everyone was great and the lads taught me as we went along, nothing quite compares to coming up the gallops on a fit racehorse.

Go for it and see what happens :D

Hi, I went to the Northern Racing College and you get a job at the end of the 12 week course. Whether you end up enjoying working in racing or not, those 3 months at college were the best months of my life, learnt so many valuable life lessons there!
We had a few people who had never even sat on a horse on my course and they left as the better riders as they had no old habits to get out of.
Whatever you choose to do - good luck & enjoy!
