I've been looking for the right Basset hound for a couple of years now, and thought I'd found a breeder. Their last couple of litters have had only small numbers of bitches in them which they've kept for their own pack (and we're only interested in a female !). I'm always willing to wait for the right dog but really would love for things to be getting under way now, I've waited long enough !
As much as I adore Bassets, the show type is so low and baggy, I just want a healthy dog. She won't be shown, bred or hunted with, she will be an active pet. The hounds we were hoping to have a puppy from are working type, and ideally I would like to find another breeder of these, but they're proving elusive ! Even a pure Basset, show-type, but bred for pet and for health, would be nice, but they seem to not exist. No use asking on Kennel Club forums, Champ Dogs etc. because of course they are purists when it comes to the show dog.
Obviously I'm clutching at straws asking about the Artesien - are there any breeders of these at all in the UK ?

Anyway, where do we go from here ? We have everything but the dog as it is ! Can anyone recommend a breeder of pet Bassets, or working hound ? Don't mind travelling for the right one. Grateful for any help you can give.

Where are you? Perhaps contact a local basset pack, they may have a pup that needs rehoming, or a slightly older one that hasn't entered well.
We have a basset puppy show here in the garden every year, they are gorgeous!

Does it have to be a puppy?

Basset Hound Welfare sometimes get racing models in. We actually had a pack hound earlier this year and managed to get him back to his pack.

I've had my basset for year now and she came from a pet breeder so isn't KC reg, but like you I didn't get her to breed/show etc so wasn't an issue. Totally agree with your views on the show dogs and I was a little concerned as to how my girl would turn out but I suspect somewhere along the lines she's got working blood in her as she is so active and looks fit not like most you come across! Really hope you can find a suitable pup, I wouldn't be without my Ruby and have to resist the temptation to get another! :D

Most of the bassets welfare get in come from the "pet breeders" as these are the ones who don't care where their puppies go as long as they get the cash. KC registration costs money so they don't do it a nd they don't health test either.

What the op wants is a slender pup a well bred litter -they do turn up- or a working/ pack hound.
No one should support breeding for pets or as it is more commonly known - puppy farming.

Does that mean that I bought from a 'puppy farm' then?

Why were the puppies bred? Without registration it would have been for the money as they are not to improve or continue the breed.
Breeding puppies that can be registered but are not is a huge red flag.

The mother wasn't KC registered, dad was so no chance of registering puppies. She wanted a puppy from the litter. (she had mother and grandmother if that makes sense). I'm still in regular contact with her and know that she would happily take back any of the puppies if the need arose. To me she was completely genuine, she was careful who she sold to and the fact that we still have contact confirms in my opinion that she does care. She hasn't had any more litters and doesn't plan to either. I was also very careful about the situation as have heard many horror stories!
I do agree that too many people breed when they shouldn't but don't think everyone should be painted in the same light.

Sorry op as appear to have gone slightly off track!

Sorry but this is irresponsible breeding and why isn't your pup's dam registered?

The stud owner is no better. No one I know will allow an unregistered bitch to their dog but the less reputable see it as easy cash.

Saying she was only having the one litter - when you know it is not the first unregistered litter she has had?

I bet Racing Riding Roo appears in the pedigree?

I don't know why she wasn't registered. It would appear everyone is to blame owner of the dam, owner of the stud dog and then me for buying her - one big long chain of events. Luckily for me the outcome is fine as I have an active healthy dog. (Just checked fathers pedigree and no sign of Racing Riding Roo) Good news though s4sugar chain stops with me as I won't be breeding from her and have never had the intention of doing so :) definitely lots of food for thought!

Op just as an after thought have you tried contacting a basset hunt pack?

What is the deal with KC registered dogs? From watching various programmes re inbreeding of dogs etc and bad health issues, manu of those seem to be KC registered from so-called 'reputable' breeders! Doesn't seem to stop you getting a poorly dog at th end of the day does it.

A friends of mine has bred a couple of litters of spaniels from her bitch. The stud dog owner kept one from each litter I understand and I believe this was 'payment'. Each time all those pups have been sold prior to them being born and my friend hasn't made huge amounts of money by any means but yes, spaniel puppies get snapped up this way as hers are very much working type. Does that make her a bad, backyard breeder? I don't see it that way, the dogs are brought up in her house, with her two kids and are all healthy happy pups.

I know little about Bassetts OP but hope you find what you're looking for. There are several round my way which i find odd as they are quite rare these days. Mind you, there is a gentleman who has a french bassett. I had never seen one before - he is gorgeous!

Thanks everyone for your replies, all input appreciated !

It does need to be a puppy I'm afraid, we'd be looking to take her home at 8 or 9 weeks old. I know they are very stubborn as a breed, not really for beginners. I want to try and get everything right with the dog, I don't think I'd be suitable for a rescue Basset, I don't have experience of the breed yet !

How strange lottie, ours will be called Ruby as well ! I chose it because with their howls/bays she will almost be able to say her own name, you know, 'Rooooo-oo, rooroo'. Haha, how sad. Are they your dog in the pics ? She's so gorgeous !

We are in Harrogate, there doesn't seem to be any packs locally at all. I don't mind travelling though. The puppies we've been waiting for were from the Albany pack. They've had a couple of litters while we've been waiting now but they keep two or three girls from each litter for the pack, and the litters have been very low on girls ! I've looked at other packs, I know there's a few still around but there seems to be absolutely no online information on them ! Phone numbers are available but I'd rather be able to find info about them first before I just go ahead and ring.

Ladyt, I noticed you're in Leeds (I'm from Leeds). Whereabouts are you ? Is the French Basset you've seen one of the Artesien Normands do you know ? I never seem to see any Bassets around. Saw a couple in York but didn't ask their owner to recommend a breeder because the hounds were really exaggerated, not the sort of thing I'm after (beautiful as they still were !)

Aww how lovely another Ruby :) really hope u do find the right pup! And yes that's her in just a tiny amount of the million of photos I have of her!
Yes they can be stubborn but no more than most dogs don't believe all the bad press they get as a breed :)

It is the deBurgh and North Essex who have their puppy show here, but I doubt they would let any pups go as pups, they don't breed many.
Have youl ooked at the Griffon Vendeen (not sure of spelling) very bassetish and more working type.

Hi Clodagh, yes we've seen the gbgvs but they're not really what we're looking for. The Basset has always been my favourite, and this will be my first dog of my own (not a family dog). I don't have a lot of money and so the £800 I'm spending on the puppy is the most I've ever spent on anything ! She'll be around for over a decade (I hope !) so she needs to be the one I've always wanted. I know that sounds stupid and fussy but the Basset has been a long time coming for me so I really would love one. While the griffons are sweet and lovely dogs, they don't make me melt like only a Basset does !
