I’m entered for a working cob class for a bit of fun on Saturday on the traditional coloured in my sig. Obviously for his type he is shown natural but for an unspecified ‘cob’ class I believe it is correct to plait his mane & tail (I think it’s meant to be plaited right up) in order to show what he would look like hogged & trimmed. Now, having watched working cob classes at the RIHS they’re show cobs, not traditional or Welsh, so I assume I turn him out as I would for a ‘cob’ class not a show class – is this correct? I would plait his mane & tail right up (polo style) for hunting and essentially the working cob class is a working hunter class but for cobs, so am I right that I turn him out as for hunting (which is the same as a 'cob' class turnout)?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

If I am showing Genie in a cob class I do a running plait down her mane, and tape her tail up. I have had judges comment that it's nice to see a welsh turned out as she should be for a cob class.

Here are some links to pics of her done up (the best I have which aren't great I'm afraid)

hmmm in not sure i would plait a traditional altho could be wrong...like u say i also have only ever seen show cobs do this class how ever that doesnt mean that u cant enter it.
my friend entered a ridden cob class on her traditional she plaited mane and tail and the judge poitned out to her that as she had feathers she shouldnt plait up.
at local level it probably wont make much difference anyway
good luck and have fun!

i think a cob is either a fully clipped hogged and pulled tail or a full flying hiar variety. either is corect, but a plaited cob? nagh i dont think so, so go for one or other. workers should be judged on conformation, performance and type. i would show true to type. be it a full blown hairy or fully trimmed.

"Working Cob" Classes are, basically, for Hogged Cobs unless otherwise specified in The Schedule. However, if there is nothing in The Schedule to exclude others - Mountain & Moorland Breeds are never plaited, nor should Traditionals be plaited. Why not look for Coloured Worker Classes?
