Sorry for vague title. Some friends of my brother have a golden working cocker, just over 12 months old, and he is trying to persuade them to rehome her. Basically they just don't have time for her although they love her to bits. She gets walked morning and evening and is on her own msot of the day, with access to a fairly ordinary sized back garden. She is apparently getting more and more hyper, and "they can't seem to get through to her" (their words). He has looked after this little dog a couple of times and he says she is quick to learn but just full of energy , theres a surprise. I have told them to stop feeding her Bakers :( but it sounds like she just isn't the right dog, or they aren't the right owners.
As yet he hasn't convinced them to part with her, but he is hoping if a really lovely home came along they would see the sense. So if anyone is interested let me know. She is in Shropshire.

I don't suppose she's speyed is she, MM?

I will ask my father in law's brother. He used to breed Working Cockers and wanted a golden one for their golden wedding anniversary last year. His wife didn't want to go right back to baby puppy again. They live next door to their son/daughter in law and he walks the dogs miles every day. His son and his other daughter also have Cockers. Uncle Howard takes them all out together!

I would take her in an instant, but Harvey is getting a little "curious" around girlies at the moment.

She isn't spayed. They say she hasn't had a season yet, but I suppose they could have missed a short puppy season. I will try and find out more and see if brother can get them to definitely agree to rehoming.

Oh dear, I remember my old Jack Russell on bakers......was not a pretty sight!

I'd be interested but I'm very wary of Working Cockers.......

i must not have another dog
i must not have another dog
i must not have another dog
....
.....
......
any chance they'd spay her before they give her away?

actually - i do know of someone nr newcastle who has a couple of rescue colliex's so used to dogs who need a lot of walks etc.... and was talking about looking out for a cocker after meeting my cocker rescue :D
i'll mention it to them - they have bitches - i have rescues but only dogs...

i have one and i know there is the cocker rage issues so was a bit wary when i was called up saying a cocker that had bitten a kid needed a last chance or would be pts....and yup - he's a black working cocker with inbred family - your classis rage case...

but when i heard the situation he was in (working bred, entire, single dog, kept in town with young family, never walked, allowed to be 'top dog' etc etc) you can see why it happened.

i got him in june last year - there was a few rough months was he adapted to being bottom of our 'pack' but by mid season he was working (with a few minor blips!) and by then end of the season he'd picked his first birds and was working really well :) he's now a chilled happy dog who cuddles up with our other two rescues (springer and lab) and is very content

i think cockers *in general* are are far happier being bottom dog - as soon as he realised he was not in control he relaxed and was a far happier dog. the problem is that they will try their hardest to be top dog and many not enough handlers are able to psychologically place (ie not physically - beat/hit etc as then you would be in trouble!!) them down to be an under dog...hope that makes sense?!

I would be too if you thought a JR needed a lot of exercise :D

Believe me when I say that he was one of a kind - i've never met a JR like him since!!! He was working type though - always on the go!

Better to know your limitations than to take on the wrong dog.....

I wouldn't have a Working Cocker (well I probably would TBH!) because they are such ruddy worms!! They are constantly in your face, my Springer is quite happy to lie on my lap without trying to stick his tongue down my throat everytime I open my mouth  Living with 5 of them all trying to do it at the same time is enough to put anyone off! :D

See we had a white and liver cocker as a child and it was a NIGHTMARE! although my parents had always had great danes and they're not the most difficult of dogs to dominate!

If you mean newcastle next to me as I am in Durham:D, I would arrange neuter and chip her if these people could offer a suitable home for her.

Thanks for the offer Cayla. Latest update is that someone at their vets has shown an interest in her with a view to doing agility. They are still dithering but I think deep down know it is best for the dog. Apparently the couple have split up, chap used to be about a bit during the day to exercise/be with the dog but now on her own mainly. Will keep everyone updated as to the situation.
Re Bakers, I did tell my brother that it was the equivalent of feeding blue smarties.:D

my cocker was like that when we got him - but soon trained it out of him.... he has to stay on his bed unless called over...
my rescue springer on the other hand... lol! ;) he'd be the biggest worm out there if i let him tehehe

glad this cocker seems to have found a new home - pm me if not - i'm sure the couple i know would be keen

All the Working Cockers I know are desperate to get into your face, at Crufts all the Working bred ones in the BASC ring were stood up at their owners wanting fuss :D My Parent's ones are real lap dogs and the more you tell them to get lost, the more they squirm closer! They're like cats, they pick on the people that don't want them on their lap
