Hi, I am hoping to have a go at this in September and so have a couple of months to learn everything I need to know to do a Novice competition. I would like to avoid making a total fool of myself but trainers are thin on the ground.

Are there any knowledgeable peeps on here who could help?

I had some friends who are very into Working Equitation and I went down to Hartpury when there was a European competition there. The riders wore "national dress" so there were these impossibly glamorous Portugese and Spanish men riding with their short jackets, and the British team were wearing tweed, so started out at a disadvantage!

Of course, Working Equitation started in Spain/Portugal and they were riding the local breeds, which find the collected canter so much easier than the hunter type horses the Brits were riding. But it may have changed and developed since then.

It looks like fun, though, if you can keep that canter!

My share horses owner is very into working equitation (previously on the British squad) so I've been to some clinics with her and had a practice at home/watched it done so happy to try and help with any questions though I'm no pro by any stretch of he imagination!
(I'm really surprised the British team at Hartpury had tweed on- the shows I've been involved in have mostly had traditional dress turnout?)
Depending on what you need/want to know, there is a nice DVD by one of the Paulos which gives a good explanation of each obstacle and how to train for it, I can find out more details if you want.

It was defintely tweed, but they were at a disadvantage as they didn't really look the part. Can't remember how long ago it was, maybe 10-12 years ago.

have you been in touch with any of the AWBE instructors in the southwest ?http://www.workingequitation-gb.com/abwe-instructors.html
Is it the SW Iberian Show you are going to? I'm sure there will be some practice before that, maybe contact Cassy Gadsby and see if anything is organised as yet. Alternatively, book yourself as short break in Norfolk, at Pine Lodge, and get some lessons on their horses - useful before trying it on your own.

Hi, yes the plan is to have a go at the SW Iberian show. I have been offered a go at a local yard who have all the obstacles so think I should be ok. It's more stuff like where you walk and where you canter which will probably be the issue but its all a bit of fun.

Thanks all for the info though folks.

You need to get in contact with Georgia Shone and Paulo Santos, they do clinics all over the country and can get you started on the straight and narrow.
