I'm taking my young horse to a working hunter class in about a month. It's only his second show but it's his first with myself. The class description says that it's ideal for tiny tots, nervous and youngsters. What should I expect? The jumps are a max of 50cm but I'm not sure if there will be any scary twists underneath or beside the jumps. Will I just have to jump a course or will I be expected to do anything else? Also I haven't got a tweed jacket so will I be marked down or will I be alright?

Sounds like a low level fun show. If you can't get your hands on a tweed jacket just make do with a navy/black jacket & enjoy yourself :)

You'll have to jump a course. At some shows, the judge will then decide who they want back in for the go-round. At others, everyone goes back in. You'll be expected to WTC in a group and show an extension or gallop.
If the fences are 50cm I can't see them being too scary. They'll probably be natural fences with a few flowers or plants underneath/beside.

I did my first workers in March and it was good fun. My boy enjoyed the gallop a little bit too much though, and didn't want to stop. ;)

Good luck. :)

Last time I accompanied someone to a beginners working hunter class (this sounds v similar), it was a round of jumps (just natural poles, fillers pulled to side or completely absent and no scary/brightly coloured ones) followed by a ride on the flat in WTC, no gallop or anything.

Clara whilst it is not against the rules it is heavily frowned on.
It also can make horses heads look long and plain so best avoided in the showring

Thank you for all your advice smja. Do you have to have a routine for your wtc? And is it necessary to salute the judge or not?

Some shows have WH training classes which are just the jumping round, without the individual show. The best thing, OP, is to ring the show secretary and ask about your class.
If you do have to do an individual show, keep it short, walk away from the judge, trot a circle, canter fig 8, extend (gallop up the long side, trot back to judge, stop, salute. Oh and remember to say "Good morning" to judge as you enter the ring for the first time.

Finish your show side on to the judge not front on and just nod, you dont need to do an arm wave to salute if you are an adult a smile and nod will suffice.
