Following on from my 'Working Hunters with a Show jumper post' How would I go about getting started? I really want to take my 18yo Connie cross out and about, He is very fit, well and wants to be doing stuff! I just have no idea where to start seeing as I have been a Show jumper since the age of 10 and never done anything else.

The best thing to do would be to go and watch at a local show or two, try and get talking to the judge and/or steward (bearing in mind they will be busy!), or chat with the competitors, people are usually more than willing to help. Offering to help at local shows is also a good idea, as you get to learn a lot from people who do it all the time and an extra pair of hands is always welcome. :)

How old are you & how big is your horse??

if you're under 25 & your horse is under 15.2, you can still do BSPS classes (intermediate whp), if you're older than 25, you can do horse workers which is for riders over 16.

If you've not not done workers before, you can start by doing novices (though can depend on how much your horse has won BS etc).

This is the society for affiliated horse workers, so you should be able to get a good idea from there.

Search for a Star also have a working hunter class - but the jumps are prettys small, if you've been used to show jumping, you might want to go into affiliated?? But they would be good to see what its like etc. Trailblazers also have working hunter classes, but again, their not huge, but would be a good place to start.
