Got no replies in Competition Riders   so I'll try here...!

Thinking of having a go at a Working Hunter Class a week tomorrow and have never done it before so would just like some advice. It is only an Unaffiliated class at a local show by the way.

1. Do I have to plait?
2. What will be expected of me and my horse?
3. Is he allowed to wear a nose net? (he needs it in the summer as the pollen and flies make him head shake slightly!
4. What tack am I allowed
5. What should I wear?
6. What is the judge looking for?

Thanks :)

1 yes
2 Usually you go in and jump the course, the clears plus possibly 4 faulters will get called back in once all have jumped. You then all go round in walk, trot, canter and probably a gallop on one side, then get called onto line, if they have a judge who rides they will get on, if not you will do an individual show, again walk trot, canter figure of 8 and show a gallop.
3 not really but if local it should not matter too much.
4 pretty much any simple plain tack, no bright saddle pads or bling browbands, keep to as little as you can, plain snaffle or double is ideal but any bit is allowed, within reason, martingale if you want, dark discrete numnah.
5 you should wear tweed jacket, cream jods, a shirt and tie, long boots, spurs, brown gloves.
6 a good clean round, not to much hooking and show jumping, the horse should move well, be well educated, mannerly and look as if it could actually go out hunting without either breaking or going crazy;)

He should still be plaited even if he doesn't like it, it cannot be that hard most appys dont have a lot of mane so just do as few as you can get away with. I used to plait one that had about 6 hairs in each of the last 5 plaits but they did look ok and stayed in, just;)
