I'm thinking about taking my boy to a local riding club next weekend and may give the working hunter class a go. Can anyone tell me what will be expected of my boy?? Many thanks in advance.....

Manners, calm yet forward going and enjoying their job. You'll go around with the rest of the field, then give your individual show and also a handful of 'natural' jumps, maybe a gate of some sorts, brush, rustic rail etc. If you can, in your individual show, show the judge a nice gallop - that will give you good marks if you boy has a good go!
I compete on my NF mare, who hasn't got perfect confirmation, but she loves to jump, show off and 'flattens' lovely in her gallop and that has always been commented on - just have ago and have fun!! Good luck!

Normally you go in and do a round of jumps. Horse needs to be forward going but well mannered, ie go a little faster than a show jumping course, they are normally well spaced out, more like you would be hunting. You can use a martingale and more or less any bit, but you will have to stay with this tack for the rest of the class. Boots are allowed for the jumping section.

The class is then called in and you do a normal showing class, walk, trot and canter on both reins on the go round, you may be asked to show gallop as part of the go round.

Next individual show unless the judges rides. Walk, trot and canter on both reins and do show a good gallop. Keep it short and sweet - no more than 2 minutes.

You may be asked to strip the horse and then show it in hand to the judge.

Final walk round and hopefully called in at the right end of the line!

Good luck and have fun.
