Just curious to know how people would react in this situation. If you were working in and you saw that another horse was very nervous when other horses approached what would you do?
I would be considerate but also expect the rider of the nervous horse to try keep out the way as it is very difficult warming up at the best of times at some show grounds.
I would keep my distance from it, but it seems that's not the norm for some people? My mare is nervy at one particular venue as a result of a horse kicking out at her last time she was there. If anything trapped her between itself and the wall she panicked. Most riders gave her a wide berth, but one rider didn't seem to be able to concentrate on anything other than her horse's head and came across the diagonal in leg yield and kept coming all the way, until my mare had very little room left at all. my girlie leapt in to the air as she was scared, cue a tut and a sigh from Miss Inconsiderate.
Not entirely sure how to deal with it really? Instructor suggested I ask people to leave her more room, but not sure how feasible that is really with the people in the working in constantly changing?
i chose option 1. TBH, even though my girl isnt in the least bit nervous, and certainly doesnt kick when i am on board - if i anticipate that a warmup area will be very busy then i will put a red ribbon in her tail. its the easiest way of informing numpties that you dont want them cantering up your ar$e. i have previously had people actually canter straight into my girls bum, luckily for them her only reaction was to shoot forward. but people need to realise that some horses will react v badly to a strange horse entering their personal space.

I think the problem is that people dont look where they are going and so when they eventually spot you its too late.
Your mare sounds exactly like mine. The reason I asked was because when warming up yesterday people were constantly running into me and my horse gets very scared and reacts like yours, she either stops and backs up or she sits doen and spins round.
There was 1 woman who was riding with 2 whips who was constantly smaking her horse but she wasnt concentrating on where she was going and kept running into us or getting too close and whacking poor Gin. That meant when warming up for the 2nd test Gin was petrified, we couldnt get out of walk as people were constanly running into us. I think its so inconsiderate, one woman even asked what was wrong and after telling her the problem she still kept aiming for us!
I try to keep out of their way and I look where I am going, its not me thats the problem its everyone else!
really? honestly, this is the one thing i dont enjoy about competitions. i was helping a friend yesterday and the warmup was an absolute disaster. riders and horses having to grind to a halt because people just dont look/ dont care. it does my nut. but i find that people pay more attention to a red ribbon as it signifies that if you approach you put yourself in danger, rather than just the rider on board - which a green ribbon could mean. i hate the fact that i have to brand my horse a 'kicker' when she certainly isnt. but if needs must!

I couldnt believe how insensitive people could be, they knew I was having problems but they just didnt care. Im going to have a bash at elementary as my instructor thinks we are ready for it so Im hoping that the better riders will look where they are going and be more considerate!
Thankfully my girlie only does it at the one venue where she had a bad experience. She's 99% fine with it everywhere else, but I do try to look after her so she's out of people's way at other venues.
I couldn't really get out of walk either, the only way I can think to deal with it, is to put them on a circle to do the faster work and stay on everyone's inside? Suppose that would annoy everyone else, but I can't see how else you can ride through it if people won't help you?
I have thought about hiring the scarey place for my girlie and getting someone to ride another horse in there with her, to prove that not every horse is going to land on top of her? I'm hoping with time and a bit more good experiences of going out, she'll get over it? I hope so anyway.
Having had a horse that used to panic at shows when horses approached him a nd also my mares panics if kids are screaming and galloping around. I would try and warm up away from others if I had the nervous horse. If I saw a horse that looked nervous etc I would try and keep a wide berth
Lexi is very sensitive and silly around other horses but actually tends to respond aggressively. I think she would kick if someone got to close and she had a panic.
95% of us say we would keep out of the way and yet even with a red ribbon in her tail and Lexi looking obviously stressed / aggressive people STILL come too close time and again!
I have to be on the ball with her and have managed to avoid an incident so far, but I'm sure the day will come when someone crashes their uber-warmblood up the back of her in medium canter and it looses it's front teath!
All a bit of a worry really.
Still, she seems to be improving with age - was definitely better at Holdenby yesterday than she has been in the past.
I have a nightmare warming up at competitions following an incident at the Winter Regionals at Addington. Somebody very kindly decided to Halt on the track just out of a corner and go into rein back. We came round the corner with a horse on our outside (left to left) and nowhere to go. PANIC!! So now we can be warming up lovely and if a horse comes towards us and we are in a corner he just flips. Its difficult enough warming up, but making sure you are not going to get caught in a corner face to face is impossible and I am sure people must think I am completely barmey.
I end up feeling really guilty and not wanting to upset all the other horses warming up and its makes the whole thing a waste of time.
If a horse came too close and your horse kicked out out of fear who would be responsible? Obviously you would think it would be them but they would also argue their corner! If it came to making a claim who would have to pay out?
God I hate warm up arenas over here - all that I have been in have been too small for me! I do the minimum poss and leave it at that - would never have a horse that needed a lot of working in as it would drive me insane!
Boss is not terribly great with other horses so I will be red ribboning him for events and just hope people pay attention - thing is it takes only one inconsiderate rider to barge you to upset your horse and mess up your chances
Willough rears and spins if someone comes head on at her. I suppose it's from her early days when she was broken in as a polo pony but didn't get on with it.
If I have a red ribbon in my horses tail and they still come too close then it is their fault. Horses are live animals - they can be unpredictable. I have done my best to warn them of her propensity.
Would still feel terrible if Lex ever hurt anyone though!
Think she will grow out of it actually, she is a lot better this year than she was last and she is still only 5. I could use a green ribbon really but nobody takes any notice of those at all!

My horsey is similar in a way to yours as he hates horses coming head on at him so I just have to be extra wary. I think its from when he did Polocross as he didnt get on with it either.
No, I had to bite my tongue otherwise I would have taken all my anger out on them. I ended up schooling in the car park for 10 mins as they were running late and it was too far to walk back to the working in.
There was a similar claim in the hunting field a few years ago. Someone crashed into the back of something and got kicked. It went through the courts and the kicker had a red ribbon in. This was deemed as admitting liability and they got done, if it had no ribbon it would have been 50/50.
I would stay well away, but unfortunately it seems other people are neither as considerate nor sensible!! I barged into regularly at shows. PF is ok with it, but Antifaz gets very cross!
