Im to-ing and fro-ing with the idea of putting my horse on working livery as i cannot find a sharer and its starting to cause issues with how little exercise my horse gets as she seriously needs it.

Does anyone have a horse on working livery? Whats your cost and how do you find it?

Thanks

I had my old horse on working livery for a while, stabled livery usually cost £100 a month and it got reduced down to £50 a month for the use of the horse but I ended up having to take him off it as because he was very safe to hack out, he was getting used quite alot and leaving me less time to ride him. It is worth it if you have set days that they are allowed to be used etc.

Never been on formal working livery but have allowed a couple of the yards I was at to use my horses for specific lessons/people (i.e. for BHS stage training, or for anyone wanting to do more in the way of lateral work/gain confidence over larger jumps). I wouldn't rule out working livery if it is an RS you know well, just make sure you get a good contract drawn up and that it is stuck to!

we had my daughters first pony on working livery, and it worked really for us. at that time we didnt have the time/facilities/experience to do the pony justice.

My daughter has recently completed 2 weeks work experience at a local equine college, and from what she told me, the horses where really looked after very well.

All had their own lists of likes/dislikes/needs etc so treated as individuals

I would check out the RS in question, and see if you can speak to any other owners to get a feel for whats its like before commiting.

As the poster above said, it depends on your trust in the RS. How many lessons will he be on and what level on rider is on him? Will they be sensitive to what kind of riders you would like on him. The worst thing would be to have kids hauling at him, or else him being taught bad habits like stopping/ refusing.

I'm getting a new cob and he is definitely going on working livery as the extra exercise would do him good. However the yard i'm in has a lovely YO who i'd trust 100% to do what suits him best. Other yards I've been in I wouldn't have.

Personally I would never put a horse on working livery as they never feel like your own. You can't just turn up and ride just because the mood takes you. Also, I am very fussy how my horses go and think they would be ruined having lots of people riding them who are mainly novices.

I'm still ummming and ahhhing about it. I found one place I was certain would have been brill but happened to know an ex employee and he said its not very nice.

I think I'm quite restricted here for decent places

Working livery isnt for everyone thats for sure. You need a horse that has the right temperament to be able to cope with multiple novice riders for a start.

But, if you can find a good centre thats convenient to you and you need additional help with costs/time/experience etc then it can be worthwhile.
