Hi everyone,

Anyone who works on a yard (mucking out, turning out, water, hay, poo picking etc, what are the best trousers to wear? I’ve been wearing old jodhpurs but am finding they take ages to dry (no tumble dryer!) and I’m washing my clothes pretty much after every wear because they are filthy and sweaty after lots of mucking out. As the job obviously isn’t well paid I’m not going to spend a fortune kitting myself out in expensive gear so would leggings be okay?

What do other people wear?

Cheap waterproof overtrousers. I like the regatta ones which are under £20

Leggings will be fine if you aren't riding.
I’d think legging will be cold in winter though.
Not sure what’s cheap and durable and dries quite quickly though. Could you look at work trousers from the likes of Dickies?

Definitely need to invest in a pair of decent waterproofs. There are lots designed to ride in as well as work. I just wear mine over tights or gym type leggings
My favorite currently are Mountain Horse ones as they are thin, have zips at the ankles so easy to switch from wellies to riding boots and have a bit of grip at the knees and seat.

I've just invested in a few pairs of fleece lined water resistant leggings off Amazon.
They've been amazing so far. So snuggly and warm and non restrictive, in that you can move in them. I wear them over tights and pull long socks over them. They have handy phone pockets too. They wash and dry pretty quickly.

Thanks everyone, some brilliant suggestions. Silly as it sounds I hadn’t considered waterproof over trousers! I’ll have a look around at the suggested ones and hope they come in a short enough leg length for me (5ft 1)!
I have the same problem re length. I bought a pair of thin waterproof Mountain Warehouse leggings and just chopped the bottom off.

Waterproof overtrousers for mucky/wet work e.g leading horses in and out of wet paddocks etc. For dry days/dry activities etc. Get 2x pairs of overalls and switch between them as the other pair is in the wash. Wear whatever underneath.

Waterproof trousers will get quite wet/sweaty inside if you wear them all the time/for high activity work.

Gym leggings? They dry quickly and withstand a fair amount of abuse.

Some are slippery to ride in but others are fine.

Definitely waterproof trousers over the top when cold and/or wet. If you are riding, Just Chaps do a great riding waterproof trousers.

I work on a farm & I'm short!!
I wear leggings with cheap over trousers & take a pair of scissors to the bottom of the legs! The Flexothane ones don't fray. On very cold days you can put long-johns or a second bigger pair of leggings underneath. My waterproof layer live on my wellies - just pull down & take off together!

Over the years I've tried most makes of "Work Wear" & find they are all shaped for men - which is to say if they fit your bum, the waist would fit two of you & you need to take the legs up by more than a foot! (I am not particularly curvy.)

Have you tried Portwest? They do some women's kit now. I have a really good big hi viz waterproof from them. It genuinely is cut for women.

The thin over chaps are handy when raining I also had suede ones I also bought cheap ski trousers or all in one suits for when it's really cold.

I used to buy the cheap primark jeans or jeggings as well, and the fleece lined leggings are good to wear underneath jeans or jodhpurs I don't like them as just bottoms as hay and everything sticks to them.

If you aren’t riding Primark do cheap fleece lined leggings. They are plenty warm enough for winter. You could then have a few and they don’t take up much space in a washing machine.
I’ll definitely have a look next time I go, I thought they only did the normal very thin pairs but fleece-lined ones sound like they’d be better for the winter months!
