Hi all,

So I'm just about to graduate from university this summer (ahhh!), having done three years of a law degree I'd like to take a year out to do some travelling and work with horses before settling down. Having ridden since the age of 4 I have plenty of riding experience, have previously worked at an Olympic event rider's yard in Ireland, a racing and polo yard, and various riding schools...also have experience working with children, coaching for the RDA and have worked at children's summer camp (non-equestrian) before.
Would be happy to work at a yard in any discipline, pretty much anywhere in the world. Am available from the end of June and am totally flexible on start/finish dates.

So any ideas/recommendations of yards, or where to look for such opportunities would be very welcome!!

A "year out", eh? Well all I can say is be bloody careful. Because I decided to go abroad to work with horses as a "year out" after uni, and that was almost a decade ago :D It's dangerously addictive, especially if you find the right job it can be very hard to go back to a normal life! I spent over 2 years working on two different yards in Italy, 9 months in the Channel Islands, 18 months in Portugal and have now been in my job in France for over 4 years working for a professional showjumper and trainer. It started as a simple "chilling out after uni" to a long-term lifestyle choice - so beware! There is no better way to experience a different country and immerse yourself in the culture than going to live and work there, and combining travel with your horsey passion really is like living a dream! I have also got to a good level in several foreign languages which is a massive bonus.

Anyway the best place to look for jobs internationally is Yard & Groom (http://www.yardandgroom.com/). I have got all my jobs from there. I would also suggest registering with www.careergrooms.co.uk too as they often have foreign jobs coming in. Both of these are free to join as a jobseeker. And I have a number of contacts in France (north), Portugal (south) and Italy (north) if any of those places interest you - feel free to PM me. But as a starting point I would go on Y&G and browse the jobs there so you can see the sort of thing that's on offer.
