i bought a mare 2yrs ago and things didnt get off to a great start. the opening week i had her she broke my dads nose, reared up then crashed down on me and kicked a hole in her stable wall. one day, i maneged to get near her and found a screw in foot- she'd stepped on it while getting off the trailer she'd arrived in! we poulticed it etc let it heal itself but instead she went chronically lame and it turned out the screw had dug a kind of funnel into her foot destroying the hoof from the inside out! it was damaged beyond repair, so the vets more or less scooped out the inside of her hoof, packed it with silicon and reconstructed a frog and heel for her. it took 2months for her to be sound, and so i could finally begin to ride her! but when i did her hooves were so brittle her shoes fell off litrally every time i rode her! we began feeding her jelly and after a few months we began to notice the difference and now the only time her shoes come off is when they're supposed to- when the farrier comes! lol

a month on, we were starting some poles. she was fine untill she got away from me when i jumped off to open the school gate, jumped the fence and split her cornet band! another month to come sound.

we moved yards. went there one day to find her leg swollen and her extremly quiet she's contracted lymphangitus. her leg wasnt responding to anti inflammitrys and the skin burst and pus poured out as though it were on a tap! i was told to massage the leg which i did, only by the point the skin was so stretched my thumb went straight through the skin and yet MORE crap came out. then a huge flap of skin fell away and she was left with a gaping hole in her leg. i was told to walk her and let the air get to it- some W***** saw me walking her and got the RSPCA out on me saying i was "forcing a horse with a leg that was clearly broken, to walk"!!! couldn't believe it! luckily when they came my vet was there to inform them of the situation.the leg was healed after about 6weeks though it would always be big so i brought her back into work, coming 3rd in her first ever hunter trial, big leg or not!

2months on the condition flared up again and she somehow got septicemia. loads of drugs and "o suri, are you EVER gonna be ok?"s later she was fine.

a few months on i went away to college for the summer. while i was away she split her tendon in the field, and was brought in. she lives out full time so was outraged at being brought in and kicked the walls, twisting her shoes out of shape and carrying on kicking so hard that they became imbedded in her hoof! in a panic she reared- and knocked herself out on the door frame, blood pouring out of her nostrils! she had mutilated the one hoof so badly it was hanging off- the vet said 2 more inches and the hoof would have completly detached itself from the rest of her leg! the vet was fantastic and took her away to basically rebuild her and by the time i came home she was good as new!

Suri (touchwood) hasnt been in trouble for 2months now but i don't doubt she'l have another brush with death before the year is out! she's 5 now, i bought her aged 3 as a racehorse hoping to reschool her- somehow we've maneged and she's a rossette machine with the kindest most laid back nature EVER! what im saying here is don't just assume your horse is schitzophrenic if he turns on you- he might be in pain. and don't give up! suri may be accident prone but after so many nights sleeping in her stable, we're close as you can possibly be. after id been away the whole summer, i came back, called her and she had a right go at me like "where the bloody hell have you been!!" my nan bought her as a christmas present for £1000- we are now faced with a £4993 vet bill, £2000 has been paid off but with no hlp from the insurance... they refused to pay out. so theres a warning lol.

Goodness and I thought Fleur was bad.

We called Fleur Dangerprone Daphne - a name that would also be apt for yours.

One thing - as Fleur got older, she did grow out of her accidents, though apart from one incident, hers were mainly minor compared to yours. Hopefully yours will do the same.

Must be tbs .Ive had mine for 2 years hes done ligament tendon and bruised his cannon bone ,split his heel with overreach and is always nicking his legs .I think they just need longer to grow up maybe we should keep them in straightjackets until they are 7yrs.Like yours has a nature to die for.

jeez, poor thing.
i thought my mare who struck into her tendon, had a thrombosis in a hindleg, and then developed a cataract (which burst a few years later, so she had to be pts as there was nothing the vets could do) was very unlucky, but your mare takes the biscuit. you must all love her very much!

Poor you and your horse. I thought my ex racehorse that I owned for 3 years was accident prone, but I think yours definately wins! Luckily my insurance paid out for all of his accidents and hospital stays! Mine also had the most fantastic temperament!

Hope your future is problem free!

Dear God!! I thought Bane was bad!

A month after I got him he got a nail in his frog, two months later he fractured his pedal bone and was off work for 5 months. He has since been kicked just behind his knee (about an inch from serious damage) and on his splint bone (this one was 2 weeks before a ODE).

Our most recently injury was him shying and impaling the inside of his hind leg on a metal post - he did this a week before I was going to the British Riding Club finals - I was competing on the Sat and only got to ride him on the Friday night at the showground!
