This is the "unofficial" world record jump is 8ft, 3 1/2 inches, jumped by Fred (Freddie) Wettach, Jr. riding his horse King's Own. They jumped in front of 25 people with motion picture photographers capturing the occasion. The record was not considered official because it was not made in front of a public gathering.

That jump is stupidly big!! How on earth can any horse jump that? I'm very impressed.

Shame about it not counting, although bizarre considering the photograph. What is the official world record?

Nope, the world's largest jump, albeit unofficial, was me and Len yesterday at 8ft4.

I am, of course joking. That is quite incredible, never ceases to amaze me :D

I actually don't like that picture. I don't know why, but I think it's cruel to get a horse to jump that high. And yes, I know they wouldn't do it if they didn't want to.

My YO told me that she looked on the HOYS website yesterday and the 138 finalists were jumping 1.35!!

And I also remember seeing, years ago, a photo of Badminton, where a horse was jumping down the most hideous drop fence. It must've been at least a 5 foot drop.

And I didn't like that either!!

I know, I am a funny, sensitive soul, but I just don't like horses being asked to do such ridiculous things.

Huaso (1933 - August 24, 1961) was the horse that, ridden by Chilean Captain Alberto Larraguibel, set the high-jump world record on February 5, 1949, by jumping 2.47 meters (8 ft. 2 in.), in Viña del Mar, Chile, one of the longest-running unbroken sport records in history (60 years as of 2009.)

Oh dear, I'd best not look then :D

I don't like the Grand National either. All the people in the pub are shouting at the horses "Go on, you useless gits" and laughing when the horses fall over. I am sat with my hands over my eyes!!

I have no reasonable explanation for this

Excuse the poor quality of the photo,it is heavily enlarged from a picture I took in 1973 of Micky Low breaking a highjump record in South Africa.

How high was this one? I've looked again at the first picture and I now think it must be a fake! (please excuse me if it is not). The jump in the first picture appears to be at least 3 times higher than the people standing watching. No wonder it freaked me out! Like watching the Matrix :D

I think the old photo was taken from quite low down and enhances what was anyway an awesome jump.I am not sure how high the jump was in my photo ,but it was taken a long distance away ,from a stand ,and this reduces the effect, plus the horse is already well into his descentI believe it was some world record, but would not have been counted due to the ban on sporting links with SA then.I have somewhere a picture of me standing below the fence, it was absolutely huge.
