worm belly?? bit worried

My youngster seems to have a pot belly (worm belly??) he is 16 months old and has always been wormed regular when he was a foal and since i have had him (december) i wormed him in the spring with equest when he moved to another field with my other horses and planning to worm again after the first frost.
Just a bit concerned as seems to have a big belly but also a bit ribby but by no means thin - he is going through a gawky stage at the moment so hoping its just that.
Any advice? and how will i know if it is worm belly or not??

I would advise getting a worm count done on him.
Ring these guys http://www.westgatelabs.co.uk/ we used them all the time on the old yard they are really good and you can ring up and just ask for advice if you need to

Is he getting a lot of grass!!? There's been such a flush of it in past week or two it could just be gawky meets grass belly!!!?!!

Talk to your vet. My baby had a similar problem two years ago but she also had immature pinworms in droppings. We ended up dosing her for five days with (can't remember name now) wormer which did tapeworm and others. Not looked back since. Also poo pick every day and twice when they're out 24/7. Good luck!

Yes they get fresh strip of grass everyday and there is alot of it

We ended up dosing her for five days with (can't remember name now) wormer which did tapeworm and others. Not looked back since. Also poo pick every day and twice when they're out 24/7. Good luck!

I poo-pick every day (paranoid about it!!) will get a worm count sorted asap.


If he has worms what is the outcome? will it be along the lines of a panacur 5 day guard wormer type??
He is well in himself, glossy coat etc

If you're talking about the 5 day guard, this does encysted redworm but not tapes.

OP It's likely just being of that age. I could show you any number of photo's of my warmblood at that age with a big belly but ribby, my coblet never did go through this phase. Both were kept upto date with worming etc, but the belly stayed, grass flush can account for some gassiness and bloating, but I found he looked worse just before he grew!

Just check with your vet that you've wormed correctly at the right time of year etc, you say you equested in spring, but equest doesn't do tape worm, so you may need to look at equimax, or pramox or double dose strongid/pyrantel to ensure your tapes have been covered.

No, it was just five days' worth of a wormer which did all. Not a tried and tested method widely known but my vet suggested and it did the trick. Thank goodness.

Sorry my mistake - it was infact equimax that i did them with in the spring, just checked!!.
My cob didn't go through the grass belly stage neither
