Worm Counts

How long after worming is it possible to do a worm count?

My mare has lost some weight and although putting it back on slowly and as she has moved fields recently I thought I'd worm her then carry on falling in line with their worming programme (which so far seems some what hit and miss, that will be addressed though once I have settled in!)

I have just given her equimax as recommended but after giving it realised I probably should have just got a worm count done first!!!

Is it worth doing a worm count now to make sure any worms have gone or leaving it a while and then doing one?
 
Doing it two weeks after worming will show if you have resistence, but you won't know unless you do a worm count before worming, as you won't know if the count is lower or not.
I'd probably leave it until a week before next worming is due.
 
I'd leave it until the week before she is due to be wormed again - so if your 'routine wormer' this year is Equest, then after 12 weeks, if Strongid P, then after around 7 weeks.
There isn't a lot of point doing it very soon after worming.
If she's losing weight, did you do her in the spring for encysted small redworm (Equest or Panacur Guard)?

She was done with Equest in the spring. Think the weight loss is down to having moved fields and going from being stabled at night to out 24/7. The fact the grass just isn't growing doesn't help and it doesn't matter how much hay you put out you can't make them eat it can you!!! Have taken advice re feed and so far that seems to be doing the trick but wanted to make sure nothing else was causing it. She is having teeth done next week so have covered all possibilities I think
