I've been baffled by the results of the horses latest worm counts that came through today! Have been in touch with the lab for a plan to tackle things, however just wondered if anyone would have any insights....

3 horses - been worm counted for the last 3-4 years/wormed accordingly depending on results. 1 has always had no eggs seen, elderly pony had a medium burden of red worms to begin with, but these have now dropped and for the last year results have shown no eggs seen. Last one, again, results have always been no eggs seen, however she has now come back with a low burden of roundworms. She's 11 years old! The other two are both adult horses. No other horses at the property, and there have been no others for at least 6 or 7 years (we've been here 5 years).

The mare in question looks well (too well!), and the only difference to the boys is she was on loan for 2 years, and came back to me almost 2 years ago. Yard she was at did have some youngstock (ponies, but as I recall they were kept in a barn all winter). I dont ever recall her being out with any youngsters.

So I'm a bit baffled as to why she has come back with a low count for roundworms - I thought they developed immunity and she hasn't shown any in previous counts.

Ideas on a post card!! ;-) tea and chocolate on offer! :-)
