Sorry for the strange title, couldn't think of how to put it!

Basically I got a new horse a couple of weeks ago. Couldn't worm over the Christmas/new year period as nowhere was open for advice and wanted to speak to someone before buying.

Anyway, spoke to westgate labs the other day about the new one, the day before I contacted them I noticed what looked like a pinworm in her droppings (just the one though). She doesn't/didn't have any symptoms.

They advised me to worm with double dose strongid P, which I did on Tuesday after ordering them online.

Yesterday there were a fair few worms in her droppings - probably around 10 worms in 5 droppings.

Today there were far more, probably 25 worms in each dropping, around 10 droppings were affected.

I am just panicking as that seems an awful lot of worms! Again she doesn't have any symptoms at all, eating well, bright etc. Wondering how long this will go on for really, and how concerned I should be about the burden she had?

Thanks

That's not many worms really. And pinworms apart from causing a scratchy back-end are not a disease threat. It just shows the wormer is doing its job and as long as the horse is fit and well I would not worry. As you have now treated for tapeworm and pinworm I would think you need to consider a dose of Equest by the end of January in case the horse came with a high burden of encysted inhibited small redworm.

Did you see worms moving in fresh poo? It might be dead/dying worms being expelled. Follow Westgate's instructions and contact them if you're concerned.

ps. Get a photo with something next to the poo for scale.

CMMB - that is exactly what I am going to do, thanks. Also, that is what I meant about the symptoms - she didn't have any at all, no scratching whatsoever which was why I was worried there were lots of worms but no symptoms.

Nope they were all dead worms being expelled, I was just concerned about the number of worms but apparently its not that much so that is good. There weren't any more this morning.

Will see what happens at the end of the month then!
