I have two of these, on ad-lib haylage plus grass, in average sort of condition for their age (no fat on their ribs really but don’t look thin).

I need to worm the whole herd soon for encysted worms, which I would usually use equest for. Well…I usually just use Equest Pramox and measure it carefully, but thinking to split the tapeworm and the encysted worming this year as less of a shock to the system (given I have the two yearlings and others that have just turned 4 with some unknown working history). So, do I worm once with ivermectin/praziquantel, then do Equest the next time? Will this be ok for the small ones? They shouldn’t have a high worm burden as have been with me for a while so have been on the same program as the others.

I am not comfortable enough with a blood test for encysted worms, that’s only been out since 2019 and involves considerable trauma to my ponies. I have one who has to be sedated for blood tests with domosedan, one who was only tamed and backed in the summer and still can’t be caught by an adult in a large open space (fine with kids), one we are still working on taming, and the two little ones. The rest wouldn’t care, but they are not an established herd and I need to either test or worm them all.

Tapeworm - I can get saliva tests and will do in future years, but I have now got three who were recently feral and one who came from a rather interesting background, so I can pretty much guarantee they need doing.

As far as I am aware, Tapeworm just needs to be done every six months if you are worming or testing. It is encysted worms that are time sensitive and need to be done before Spring. It’s just complicated by everything being stuck together now. If I give Equest today for example, my next option for tapeworm isn’t for three months then as it comes combined with ivermectin or moxidectin.

Anyone know a good tapeworm wormer that isn’t combined with moxidectin or ivermectin? Pyrantel based maybe? My local feed store is useless!

Mine were all done with Equest a couple of weeks ago for the encysted worms. They are all tapewormed separately in spring and autumn so never use Pramox.
I've got yearlings to teenage horses.
