I now there have been a few posts on here about worming and whether we should pump chemicals into our horses or rely on worm counts but with miniature horses its a slightly different story. I am limited on what wormers i can use. I CANNOT use any Moxidectin based products as these can kill miniatures so im limited.

I have just had a worm count done on both the boys which came back a count of <50 and no eggs seen.

Now i know i still need to worm for tape worm and encysted small redworms but how often should i worm for the others if at all????

If i dont worm for the others how often should i get a worm count done???

I had the same result for my 17hh TB done by Westgate Labs.

They the suggest following a reduced worming/targeted programme which means I do not have to worm until giving an autumn dose of wormer for tapes (they recommend Equitape in Sept) and a winter dose for encysted redworms.(recommend Equest or Panacur Equine Guard in December)

After this I should worm count every 3 months and only give wormer if the count rises above 200 e.p.g.

They also say that this is suitable if your horse is kept with just a few others in a 'low risk' situation as mine is.

I'm going to give it go & see how I get on. Hope this is of some use.

I worm for Tape & Encrysted twice a year and have worm counts done twice a year too. As all counts have been <50 eggs, for last 3 years, I haven't wormed for anything else.

March and Sept (so have results before I worm for Tape & Encysted, incase I need to worm for anything else too). In theory you should be able to worm for Tape & Encysted once a year (normally Autumn, and I have been seriously thinking about stopping my Spring worming this year, provided count is clear so I don't need to worm for anything else).

I use equest for encysted red worm late Dec/Jan. I worm count in late March before going onto the summer fields at end April. Worm count again late September to know if I need a combi or just tape for when I worm in mid October before changing to the winter fields.

I have been doing this for several years now and only do two worm counts as mine are normally clear/low. Chancer has needed worming in March but I understand this is common in youngsters to need more worming.
