Today whilst at a show my friends pony had a worm hanging from his bum
It was only a couple inches long and was a creamy yellow colour - to me it looked like a bean sprout (my apologies - I hope no one's eaten chinese chow mein reading this lol - what an image!
) What do you think she is dealing with?
The pony had done a poo inside the trailer (prior to the worm coming out), and we checked the poo and nothing was in it. He had done a few more poo's during the day and there was no sign of any worms.
A bit of background - the pony is kept in a field with several other horses, the yard my friend is at has a very strict worming programme and they were wormed at the end of March with Pramox. Due to be wormed next in 2 weeks.
This last week he has been rubbing his bum on his stable door and wall which has caused his coat to fall out (no sign of scabbing in case you thought of ringworm). I assume this itching behaviour is due to worms?
We thought about isolating him again but 'assume' the rest of the herd may be infected? She's reluctant to stable him as he has caused sores on the inside of his dock from rubbing his bum on the door (his tail went over it) and she doesn't want him to make himself raw and it get infected (sensitive arab)
All the horses in his field have been there a long time and have followed same worming programme. There was an incident where a new horse which was joining another herd (not friends ponys field), escaped from isolation and got into my friends ponys field. The new horse was wormed on arrival at the yard, the owner never mentioned if the horse had worms in his droppings or not, but the isolation was poo picked and the horse finished off isolation stabled 24/7. Not long after the lady had to move as her horse kept escaping from the fields. Do you think this is where the worms may have come from? My friend's never had worm problems before, nor has anyone else in her field.
Obviously all of the horses will have to be treated - the worming date will have to be brought forward (it's only due in a matter of two weeks anyway). The field will need to be totally poo picked. Would you suggest all horses are wormed whilst in that field, and then moved out of there so the droppings can be collected? If so, what type of time period?
If there is anything I have missed out that you want to ask, feel free and I will try to answer as best as possible. I will be grateful any advice you have on such matters - what type of worms it may be, how to treat it, what with, course of wormer over 'x' days, poo picking etc...
Many thanks in anticipation xx
