Worming Advice, What and when?? (also in vet)

picking my new pony up next week and need some advice about worming. I've been horseless for a while and all the other horses ive had have been kept on livery yards and i've jst wormed according to what i've been told by YO, but this pony is coming to my house so its all down to me.

I have no idea where to start. I know i should womr him as soon as he arrives but with what? The owner said she would worm him before I collected but how would I know for sure that she had? Is it safe to worm him again anyway
just to be sure.

Also is there anywhere I can get a kind off worming programme from which tells me what to worm wit and when? or is it not tha simple?? HELP!!!"

just to add I have three DIY liveries on my yard which the new pony will be turned out with? Do i have to fit in with their worming programme?

First of all, never ever believe the seller has wormed as stated, and worm your new horse immediately. I would suggest an all-round wormer, despite the time of year, or you may like to keep him seperate for a week and get a worm count dome. It is always best if all horses on the yard are wormed with the same thing at the same time.
Contact either your vet or someone like Abbey Diagnostics for advice on worming, or you can easily find worming programmeson-line.
 
Hi! Has the yard you are going to with your new horse got a worming program and lots of horses are turned out together? If so then I would fall in with whatever they are doing. Equally so, when you collect your new horse I would worm straight away with a broad=spectrum wormer such as Equest Pramox or Equimax.

If you have individual turnout, or turnout with other like-minded people you could do a worm count, say twice a year which could then target your worming and not just add chemicals ad hoc into your horse's system. I have individual turnout for my horses (they are together!) and I poo pick 3 times a week. I do a worm count and then use Equest Promax around Christmas to make sure that bots and tapeworms are covered. Overall it is much cheaper and just as effective!
 
And yes! If the other DIY's are all in the same field with yours then I would fall into line with them! Your vet can give you guidance if you do decide to worm.
 
Its my yard, so i guess i really have to get to grips with this worming malarky quickly!

The three liveries left are the the only ones that stayed when the old owner moved, and yes horses are all turned out together.

I've been looking at plans on the internet as i think thats the best way for me to manage a yard of horses and possibly a few coming and going throughout the year. Can stick a copy up in the tack room and everyone knows what and when to worm. Saw this :

does that sound ok? I'm guessing you move from one plan to the next each year? and worm each new horse with a general wormer, such as equest paramox (if on plan A)as it arrives?
 
Yes that would be sensible. At least everyone can see what they should be doing. I would also arrange to buy your wormers at the same time so that you can make sure that everyone worms when they should!
 
Unfortunately I would say definitely don't use one of those old fashioned planners. That kind of programme is out of date, uses too many doses (designed to sell wormers), takes no account of resistance problems.

I am an SQP, and I know there are others on here too. We are all being asked to stop and think before prescribing wormers. Only worm wormy horses, use the correct products when you need them. If we all continue to worm on those kind of plans there will soon be nothing left which is effective when we need it.
