So I have been trying to convert my yard to intelligent worming, and we are getting there. We have two fields, one of YO's two mares and another gelding, and one of my mare and another mare who arrived in August. I have been worm testing my mare for the last year and she has always had zero egg counts. She had a pramox Sept 2011 and an equest at some point last year, can't remember exactly, Feb maybe. I poo pick and keep her on a track.
This time I got some of the others to join in with the worm counts - YO did her stallion (who doesn't go out with the others) and the other mare who goes in my field. The other three will just have a pramox this weekend. I got the results this morning - stallion is clear, my mare is medium (200epg) and therefore definitely needs worming and the other mare is low (50epg). So from my understanding the two mares need worming and the stallion needs a tapewormer only.
Now, the other mare is simple - just give her a pramox along with the others. My mare though is a bit more complicated. She is 22, just been diagnosed with cushings (so is on prascend) and also has compromised liver function (hepatitis). She is also on 2 bute a day for a tendon injury. So I am a bit worried about giving her a combination wormer. On the other hand, it's autumn so I do need to do tapeworm as I haven't tested for it and she's tested positive for strongoyles so I need to worm for those too. Can any of you kind knowledgeable people tell me what to give my mare and reassure me that I am doing the right thing for the others?
Thank you - I have (shop bought) bread and butter pudding and (home made) custard on offer.
