My new boy hasn’t any record of his last worm and I cant get a straight answer if he is due, over due or never wormed, he had a rather large belly and is thin so I sent off a worm count test and wormed him with equilan duo, still haven’t had the worm count back (after a week) so I rang them only to find out it didn’t arrive so what now, shall I send another one? His belly isn’t as big as it was so I am sure he is/was wormy, now also I have a 5 day guard to give him, but have been told to wait 6 weeks. What do you think? I want all worms out of him but in the safest way possible assuming they didn’t worm him in the 2 years they had him, and considering its come back that his teeth haven’t been done in at least 5 years its highly likely he hasn’t been done for a long time.

I would double check with the vet as I dont want to say the wrong thing here but when I had my 6 month old, she had been wormed but when I wormed her with normal Equest (when due) she still had roundworms. She was also due a tapeworm dose so my vet said to be sure, give her the Equest first (had already), then double strongid that was the weekend after or maybe 2 then 6 weeks later she had a 5 day Panacur course. The vet said they are tested at many times the levels and so should be very safe. The fact that the wormers contained different drugs also mean overdose due to different wormers is very unlikely. One thing they and may others did say is just be careful with Equest and Equest Pramox (although she would have been too young for this anyway) as they soak into the horses fat stores and release themselves slowly, thus giving the long period of protection, so dosing correctly is very important especially if the horse doesnt have alot of fat (i.e poor or young).

ETA - do just be careful and montior the horse afterwards as if he is very wormy, he could get colic from mass exodus of worms and/or worm damage. 5 day is probably the best for controlling this as is it a gentle and long steady acting over 5 days rather than one big killer hit but still be careful - I am sure you know this already, sorry if I am preaching what you already know!! xxx

Just spoke to them, they said following the equlian duo already done, 10 days later the 5 day guard at double the recomended dose, then he should be clear.
