My companion pony is 28 and was diagnosed with cushings last year. She was a rescue and virtually feral when she arrived 4 years ago. She was unhandleable when she arrived, to the point of attacking if you got too close to her. She is handleable now, so long as she doesn't feel cornered or trapped, when she gets absolutely panic stricken. Therefore I have never been able to worm her with a syringe. Before the cushings diagnosis I wormed her by putting the wormer in her feed. Since she's been on prascend she's got gradually more funny about feed and wont eat anything other than hay or grass. She wont take anything by hand or even from a feed bowl.
When I had a previous horse injected for mites (cant remember what the vet used) the vet said there would be no need to worm as the injection would act as a wormer too. I was wondering whether this would be an option for worming my pony???

I think the injection is Dectomax, my mare recieved them for what they thought was mites but turned out to be allergic reaction, anyway best to contact vet to see if that's an option for your worming.

When I was a teenager we used to pay the vet £10 to give them an injectable wormer once a year with the vaccinations. It was dectomax, As an adult I've never bothered, but mine got mites earlier this year and had the 2 injections for them. I skipped worming an his usual worm counts on the vets advise. Just worm counted him and he is clear :) He might have been anyway, but who knows! Its an ivermectin based wormer so doesnt cover everything but its got to be better than nothing :) You can test for tapeworm now as well, so with clear worm counts it might work, definitely better than nothing :)

It would have been dectomax that was used. I'd start getting some counts done before injecting I think as no point in putting her through the poss stress of that if no need. Especially if you have control of the grazing/poo pick regularly.

Agree here, get a worm count done first and see if she actually needs worming.
