You got a donkey!
cool.gif
. I love donks and have the honour to own Doodles. I worm her exactly the same as Paulino the pony and with the same brand and at the same time as my horses. They get half a syringe each. Paulino is a sod to worm but Doodles is so easy and seems to like it!
crazy.gif
. Can you post a photo of your donkey? Tell me all about him/her. Will get a photo of Doodles tomorrow

Donkeys can get lungworm so both horse and donkey have to be wormed against this if sharing paddocks.

[/ QUOTE ]Yup I knew Donkies can get lungworm... ohh so I'd have to worm Jags against it too!? Interesting... so how comes when horses are mixed with sheep they aren't 'wormed' against it?! OR should they be?

Dito the lung worm!
Its why some people wont have donkeys near their horses!
Mine are well wormed (Oh and well deloused!!! they crawl more than horses if you dont do it regualarly!!!)
One thing I owuld recommend is phone your local donkey sanctuary I did this they came out and are soo helpful! they will help you with feed etc and give you some evry impt points!!

Two v impt ones I was told were 1) they have to be eating continually (within reason) ie if they get too fat you cant stand them in with nothing as their wee systems can go into shock!
Secondly (bit morbid here) if something happens to one you have to let it mourn the other before you take it away or it wont accept it has died, again they can go into shock. they will wlak away from their friend when they ahve accepted it .

That all said have loads of fun they are naughtly little monkeys but I woulnt be without my pair even if they are both well over 40!!

Hey You!

On another note - please make sure you get their teeth checked on a regular basis.
Donk's can have major problem with plaque building up on their teeth.

[/ QUOTE ]Hello!!!

Thanks... I think this will be something that I will do when the dentist comes out to see Jaggles in April/May time.

They'll feel proper pampered.. I'm even planning to buy them little turn out rugs!!!

Sheep get a different species of lungworm to horses. Sheep get infected with Dictyocaulus filaria and horses and donkeys get Dictyocaulus arnfieldi.
The thing with donkeys is they often carry the parasite but show no clinical signs but then pass it on to horses who do.(Coughing)
It can be treated with fenbendazole "Panacur" or high doses of oral ivermectin "Eqvalan" ideally in the spring.

I miss my Donkey
frown.gif

Dinky Rugs (Google it) do some really nice donkey rugs - the problem we always found with our donk was that normal pony rugs didn't fit him very well - the neck was always too big.

The Donkey Sanctury are great if you want any advice. I LOVE going on their website and watching Donkey Cam!!

Sounds a good plan and I'm sure they'll appreciate the apple flavour one (at least my neds do! - actually bang doors wanting to be wormed - odd). They don't specifically need the 5 days for lungworm but its a good time of year for the 5 day course for treating encysted strongyles anyway so why not. Mind - there is some evidence of worm resistance to benzimadazoles (the group panacur is in) so maybe do them with Eqvalan next time to be sure.

The donkey sanctuary have also produced quite a good book called "The professional handbook of the donkey" which is quite useful but also has some very cute pics! Never knew there were so many different breeds of donkey - some with curly hair and some nearly 16hh!

Another thing about donkeys is that they are not as 'waterproof' as horses - even if it is mild weather they need to be able to shelter from the rain. I suppose essentially they are more still desert creatures, and can deal with cold better than wet.

[/ QUOTE ]Thanks Sooty - yes the donkies in winter are normally in the stables.... there is a perimeter fence at the edge of the hard standing so they have free walk of the yard and a box for shelter.... as they will however be turned out with Jag I am going to purchase them a rug each.... was considering a small pony rig or foal rug as they are tiny weeny miniture wonkies!!!
smile.gif

The dinky rugs look cool but I don't really want to spend £50 on a rug each!!

Don't have any that big - all mine are 4ft or 4ft 3"
frown.gif

[/ QUOTE ]I could be TOTALLY wrong - infact I probably am... I'm just thinking Jags is 6ft - 6ft3" and they are WAY smaller than that half the size infact... hmm best if I measure I think!! LOL!!

If you do have any spare (and they are big enough) that I could maybe purchase from you then I'll PM if that is OK hun?

Yeah thats fine - my boys stand between 30" and 34" and need 4ft rugs if that gives you a better guide.

Our Donk stood about 40" and had a 4ft 6" rug.

[/ QUOTE ]Hey Chick... well I think by measuring that the Donks will require a 4ft3 and one which is smaller may even get away with a 4ft!!
