Won't use Pramox because of the colic risk. The risk is well known among SQPs, so no idea why the stuff is still so heavily promoted by vets etc .

Use plain Equest in Jan/Feb for the annual encysted redworm treatment.

Like lots of people, since they withdrew Equitape (praziquantel) I now use Equimax for tape, which is bonkers as it contains praziquantel + ivermectin, so I'm having to give the ivermectin unnecessarily. I do alternate Equimax with double dosing Strongid P for tape.

I think encysted is best done with a blood test.

Our yard doses with Pramox routinely at this time of the year for tapeworm but I choose to test before giving it as it's nasty stuff. Most on the yard don't test, I presume as it's an extra cost. But then so are the side effects which seem to be more common with Pramox than any other wormer, that I've heard of.

I used to use Equitape but they no longer make it for use in the UK, if at all.

Is there an alternative to Pramox for tapeworm?

Equimax or a double dose of Strongid P for tapeworm.

Yes that is what I do. I am always guided by Westgate Labs they are very good.

westgate also told me to wait until the new year to worm for encysted redworm but then my vet today said to worm now for it and tapeworm (was planning on saliva test for tapeworm in Jan). I find so much conflicting advice from professionals on worming.

Vets can order in and sell you a praziquantel-only wormer (in fact a lot of vets actually keep it in). It's pretty cheap and was developed particularly to combat the people using moxidectin/praziquantel products just to worm for tapeworm and thus unnecessarily contributing to moxidectin resistance.

The only wormers acive against encysted redworm are moxidectin (Equest/Equest Pramox) and fenbendazole (Panacur Guard 5 day). Unfortunately there is widespread resistance to fenbendazole, so while there are still some specific veterinary justifications for its use, it is not a particularly effective wormer for any type of worm.

Given all the evidence about pramox causing issues, how has it not been banned? I confess we’ve been using it on our yard for many years, once a year all the yard is done with it in January after we’ve had a frost, the rest of the time we worm count, so far we’ve had no issues and we have 24 horses, but now reading all these horror stories, I think we may change our worming programme in future?

does it have a specific name please? asked my vet about a year ago but didn't really get a reply.

If there is a praz only wormer in existence why can't it just be sold directly to the public as equitape was? If the public can be trusted with a mox/praz can they not be trusted with just a praz one?

It's explained here. The product hasn't been specifically licensed for horses so can't be sold direct to the public but can be prescribed by vets.

Exactly that. It's a 'special'. It's not to do with trusting or not trusting the public, it's to do with prescribing law. The drug is not actually licensed.

For similar reasons it has no trade name, it's just Praziquantel Paste.
