Am I going crazy?

Since our YM left last Sep, we have had a member of the yard "take over" the worming schedule to ensure that we all worm together etc.

Last week we received a message to say that we would be worming with Equimax (praziquantel + ivermectin). I was a bit late in responding, but have since had a bit of a blow up with the person involved as I asked why we weren't worming, as normal, with Equest Pramox (praziquantel + moxidectin) for encysted redworm.

I had a message back to say that Equimax treats all strongyles and tapeworm, to which I replied that small red worms are not strongyles. After that I got a message with a whoooooole long list of all of the scientific names of equines worms, and was told that Equimax had been recommended by three different vets.

I'm going to refuse this "yard party" wormer, and buy my own - am I daft for doing that?

The rest of the year we do worm counting, so this is the only real time we have to treat for tape and encysted red worm.

I could be over-reacting as I lost my previous cob partly due to intestinal damage from a high worm burden despite being on a vet approved chemical regime.

You are quite correct, Equimax does not treat encysted stages of redworm. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing! It's a useful good product for certain situations but not suitable as your winter dose.

Can I go slightly off at a tangent and ask if in the mild weather we have had, encysting took place as normal? I heard that eggs were being shed almost as much as in summer, and TBH, I have Equimax (donated by a well wisher) so I am planning to wait until the adults emerge to treat them. Borderriever? Someone told me students at Reaseheath were doing some research but no conclusive findings as yet.

I would buy my own wormer too - I think as long as you worm at a similar time to the others on the yard then it really won't effect the other horses.

I've just been advised by Westgate to give my 5yo and 14yo mares their usual winter Equest dose, both have returned <50 epg counts for years.

The foster filly has unexpectedly returned a high count (800 epg for strongyles and 400 epg for ascarids), despite being wormed once with Panacur 5 day Guard and twice with Pramox since May, and counting at 200 epg just before her last Pramox in mid November. Westgate are advising me as to how to proceed, she's just completed another Panacur Guard 5 course and will be worm counted again in 2 weeks and 4 weeks.
