I get a little confused on what to use and whether to swap around etc

Our vets are offering some sort of deal now that includes injections/worm counts etc but I don't want to start / look at that until Chum's injections are due which is April.

In the meantime I was going to continue the programme I did last year, does this sound okay?

This week: Panacur Equine Guard (5 day)

End of March/Beg April: Equimax

Beg and End of Summer: Eraquell

End of Autumn: Equimax

Also, one of my Shetlands had lice a few weeks ago which seems to have been sorted by a couple of applications of Frontline - he isn't scratching at all anymore. I also treated my other two ponies but they showed no signs of lice anyway. However, do you think I should give him a wormer that contains Ivermectin too? Would it be okay to give him alongside the Panacur?

Thanks for any replies and I hope this all makes sense

Don't forget to go by the chemical in the product not just the product name. Nowadays i would do a worm count first then if i need to, worm, then worm count again, each time you are due to worm do a worm count first and don't worm if you don't need to, this will help reduce the likelyhood of resistance.
If you do need to worm, choose a good base wormer to use on a regular basis, interchanged with another wormer if base wormer doesn't treat encysted red worm (Bendizole or praziquantel based) at this time of year, something for tapeworm (Double dose of pyrentel or single praziquantel) September/October and something for bots (ivermectin or moxidectin based) December time. The rest of the time use the base wormer. Change your base wormer every 2 or 3 years. That is what i would suggest anyway, Hope this helps.

Thanks for advice, I think I'm going to start doing the worm counting as it all seems so hit and miss without??

Can anyone explain how/when you worm count, is it easy to follow the results and recommend a particular company that does them?

Oh, and how much does it cost...?

I suggest you worm count when you are due to worm before you worm, then worm and then worm count two weeks after you worm for teh start, then worm count every time you would normally worm (every 8 - 12 weeks) and only worm if the count results say you should, it will seem expensive at first but it evens out. http://www.westgatelabs.co.uk/ is a good place to find out more.

you dont need to rotate wormers - that's an old myth. most of them have resistance issues now anyway. stick with something that works - equest/equest pramox every 3 months - easy peasy.

Interesting about the rotation too, thanks. Just out of interest, do you worm count?

Thanks again everyone.

i have done in the past whilst using this regime - it actually meant i could cut down worming even more so just did 1 equest and 1 pramox a year.
