I have a quick worming question...

After moving yards from a place that used worm counts, to a yard that doesn't, horse was wormed with Equimax in Nov/early Dec time. He was then wormed again in Jan with Equest, suggested by my vet, who also told me to use an ivermectin-containing wormer around about now.

So the question is... which one? I was thinking Eraquell, since I've already used Equimax. Any comments?

Thanks :)

What are you worming for? Vets will get you to over worm IME.

There's an interesting thread about worming with someone who works for Westgate labs answering various comments in Veterinary:

Is it a big yard? Is there any worming programme? If not, I'd carry on with worm counts and worm for tape/encrypted red worm when appropriate. No pont in chucking chemicals down your horse for no good reason, that'll lead to eventual resistance.

Just worming "with ivermectin at the end of April" as told to by my vet, as he was done for tapeworm in Nov with Equimax and then routinely with Equest in Jan.

Looking at the wormers direct schedule, maybe I should be doing Equest Pramox now, then Eraquell in the summer...? I've never ever had to do my own worming prog before, always been told what to get by every yard I've ever been on.

I always thought you did Equest Pramox earlier - December/January time? I had a worm count back today for my boy which was 300 epg :( so I rang Westgate Labs and they have suggested an ivermectin based wormer - I dont think it matters which one as the active ingredient is the important bit (I think!) :)
