Hi –
My horses are stables at a yard where we all worm at around the same time (i.e. within a week or two). However, one owner doesn’t worm her pony at all because she claims that the vet told her that, unless everybody worms on the same day, worming is just money down the drain and won’t help at all. She says the vet said that unless we all worm on the same day the eggs etc are still in the grass and so on so it doesn’t make a difference. This sounds v odd to me! They’re still on the same grass anyway before and after being wormed and I’ve never heard anyone say this (though of course this could just be my lack of knowledge!) has anyone else ever heard this from a vet?! Is it really an excuse not to bother worming at all?!!
Also, I use EQUEST paramox every thirteen weeks as recommended, is it really true with this wormer that the worms won’t get immune to it and that I never need to use anything else?
Thanks for your help!

you dont need to use Pramox every 13weeks, that's just a waste of money. they recommend alternating pramox with plain equest.

and yes, ideally you should worm on the same day although i'd still worm rather than doing nothing - cant you all organise to just worm on the same day and with the same stuff.

as a yard owner i insist all horses are wormed on same day, or they have to come off the grazing, i also insist they are all wormed with same wormer, except for the preggie ones as they cannot have pramox, so they have equest, we also give different wormers at different times of the year, to cover the life cycle of all the varietys of worms. Nobody would be allowed to turn out an unwormed horse, all new horses are wormed and stabled for 48hrs, we have nearly 40 acres and some fields are over 10acres, so there is plenty of grazing and i do not want it goin horsesick, we have a small flock of sheep, and 2 cows which are used to follow the horses and clean up the grazing, this has worked for me for 25yrs the grazing is still clean, the worm counts are always 'non detected'

Yes, they should all be wormed on the same day with the same product. You should only use Pramox spring and autumn and use Equest in betwen. I would worm even if the group worming is not done on the same day.

So why do you worm if no worms are detected?

Just asking.

because when worm counts come back no worms detected, it does not mean you have no worms, but it does mean your wormin programme is working, if the worms are present in small numbers there will be very few eggs and these could be missed in a count as you only send a small amount of dung, so you still have to worm, but i only worm 4 times a year, and do worm counts in between
