Worming when not sure when it was last done?

Morning
A friend has justed purchased a very lovely mare who's in need of more than a little TLC (trying to be tactful).
One of the (many!) issues is that the old owners don't appear to have wormed her for a least a year! How should our friend best go about worming her without potentially causing her any problems if she is carrying a heavy worm load?
Any help gratefully received.

Normally start with the panacur guard five day wormer then a couple of weeks after equimax or equest (sorry can't remember which off the top of my head

)

That should get rid of all of them

Has your friend spoken to her vet about a worming programme for the mare? It may be the best route to go down.

When I purchased my new horse I was informed that he hadn't been wormed for 6 months. I double dosed him when I got him home, and then single dosed him again 4 weeks later. I'm about to do a five day guard shortly as well.

I would be tempted to speak to the vet though in the first instance.

Ditto to what amymay has said , if you decide to worm without seeking vets advice, do not use equest as a first wormer, as it is very strong first time wormer, and could easily cause death .

I prefer to use pramox, as it's gentler on the system, and is an all round wormer. You can do this now, then follow up with your normal worming programme to fit in with the yard. Guard has a little more of a reputation for causing blockages if they're badly worm ridden, pramox seems to be just that little bit gentler.

Have you thought about having a worm count done?.That way you could worm according to the results!.

I agree, I have not needed to worm my horse for ages. I do worm for tape worm though.
