Worming

In a nut shell, I bought a new horse two weeks ago today and the old owner said she didn't remember when he was last wormed but that he had definately gone too long so I gave him a full tube of Equimax the next day.
The whole yard is being double dosed with Strongid P this weekend. Obviously I would like to get the new guy in synch with the others and am aware that he needs something for tape worm, but if I give him the Strongid P, do you think that is too much in a fortnight?
He is only little BTW - 15.2hh WB x TB so pretty light build!
Thanks

Err.... I would speak to your vet regarding the short period elapsed between wormings. I personally used equest pramox for tapeworm this time as a couple of people told me that there has been some resistance to the group of drugs that strongid p falls into. Perhaps it would be worth your while getting the horse worm counted instead to see if you actually need to worm again?

Sorry didn't know that! I always had my Dales pony worm counted because she was laminitic and on founderguard so it was easier not to worm her. I thought they checked for everything.

Just checked on Westgate and it says there is a good chance tapeworm eggs will show. Also this is only a one off worming that you may be unable to do. Until you speak to a vet or manufacturer it's unclear if you will be able to worm yet, am I correct?

If there is no conclusive consensus on here then I will ring my vet on Monday. Just thought it was worth a shot asking in case the answer was really obvious and I'm being numb!! and also because the others are meant to be done on Sunday but they can wait a day.

I have no reason to think he has tape worm and therefore doubt I will have his bloods tested (he had some taken two weeks ago when vetted) but as with most people I worm anyway as a precaution / prevention so I would like to give him something for tape worm at this time of year but do not want to overdose him on wormer!!!

As Equimax treats for Tapeworm, I really see no need to worm again and would be rather hesitant to do so. tapeworm can, but very rarely do, show in worm counts and should not be used for diagnostic purposes for tapeworm.
I would advise calling your vet or Chris Dolby of Abbey Diagnostices or Gill from Westgate Labs, for advice.

If he was covered for tapeworm two weeks ago, you don't need to do it again surely. Or is it yard policy or something. You are very wise to check out worming advice anyway, it seems to change quite regularly and is really confusing I think.

If you are sure he's been done for tapeworm, I'd do him with Strongid P in the spring. I would, however worm him for encysted small redworm now - with either Equest (moxidectin) or the Panacur 5 day (messy but most effective).

If you have used Equimax then you have wormed for tapeworm already. No need to give another, less effective tapewormer eg based on pyrantel.

You have also covered most stages of redworm, but not encysted stages. You can do this next time, in about a couple of months, with Equest. Hopefully your yard programme will include this dose next time?

Worm counts cannot be relied upon for tapeworm testing even though the eggs are often seen. You need a blood test with the vet or else a wormer once a year (low risk), or twice a year (higher risk)
Hope that helps. Don't forget we have a full list of all UK horse wormers and what they cover, to download on our website.
