When we got Donovan in Oct, our YO wanted him wormed obviously before he was turned out, so he had a dose of equamax, which is what the yard was on. What else would I need to worm him with now? We always had Benson on equamax and equest, and was wormed just 4 times a year but the yard has changed now and no one eems to know what we need to do next!

worming is a minefield, and everyone you ask will tell you something different (proffessionals included!).

if he were mine and had previously been wormed with equimax to do the tapes and bots, i would now worm around this time with something for encysted red worm (i dont believe equimax does the encysted stage ) for example equest or panacur 5 day course (although some people believe 5 day guard is less effective as there is some resistance but can be useful if you have a horse with high worm burden as equest can be too strong - mine field - see what i mean !! ) however as your has been wormed recently i would probably use equest.

i would then worm count every 3 months throughout the summer and worm for tapeworm and bots again in winter (using different product to last year) and encysted red after christmas.

as i said, everyone will tell you different and this is only my opinion - good luck with what you choose as what ever you do someone will think its incorrect !!

I suppose its bad really, but ever since I have been there (10 years with Benson) I dont know of anyone who has had a worm count done. What do i have to do to get one done? Sorry, probably being a bit thick here!

there are several companies that do it. i use westgate who i really rate. i buy a '4 count' pack with 4 tests in it for just over £30. they send you everything you need, you fill a little pot with poo as per the directions they send you and send it off to them.

they will then e-mail or text you the result within 48 hour normally. if it comes back low or nil you do nothing and worm count again 3 months later. if it comes back medium or high give them a call and they will advise you what wormer to use. they are great to just call and chat with for advice.

its a lot easier than i thought it would be. ive been doing it for years now and have only needed to worm twice a year since i started !!
