Hi . I have had my mare for nearly a year now and have just moved yards. At new yard she is in full time and at the last she was out full time. At my last yard my horse was wormed for me, I'm not sure when as I just paid for it and they did it. Basically. How often do you do it? Would there be any harm in giving her one now anyway? and is it something you put in their feed or mouth?

Are all the horses at your new yard on the same worming programme? If so find out when they are next due to be wormed and if its not for another month or two I would give yours a standard dose of Pramox. It comes in a tube and you squirt it into either the feed or the mouth depending on whether your horse will eat it or not. You may want to get someone to do the oral worming for you for the first time as some horses can be a bit tricky and you need to be quick and confident.

The pramox will cover you for everything you need this time and allow you to slot in with the new yard.

If you do a search for Westgate Laboratories you will find loads of information about worms, how and when to use which type of drug and sample programmes to follow if your new yard lets clients do there own thing.

Be aware that just because your horse isnt turned out at the moment you do still need to worm as faeces dropped into your bedding may still hold a burden which can find its way back into your horse through spilled feeds and bits of hay.

I would firstly ask the new YO whether the horses are on a worming programme. I do the one for ours, get all the wormers etc. and organise what is being fed when. We are worming with Equest next week if that is any help...

I also try to keep the worming to four times a year (sometimes it does end up being 5).

If you are moving on to a new yard, they will probably expect you to worm as you go onto it (that is how it works at ours).

when a new horse comes to our yard they have a panacur 5 day equine guard.

really all the horses need to be on the same worming programme to effectively control worms, all ours are done on the same day following a plan from the vet.

i use equest every 13 weeks(so 4 times a year) and do equitape twice a year in spring and autumn with my two.
they say you dont need to rotate on another chemcial group for equest in the literature as there is no resistance to it.
and i change every two years to do one year of using ivermectin.

Mine have worm counts and I use equest in December and one for tape in September. I only ever worm for anything else if the counts are not clear.

With worm counts you still need to use equest for encysted red worm and either a blood test or a wormer for tapes as these types of worms do not show up on the counts.

I have just looked at the website suggested and it's all to do with worm count?.
sorry to steal the post but...

Can anyone recommend a worming programme for a horse not on a yard? Starting with a dose of Pramox say in feb, I am looking towards worming 4-5 times a year, but unsure of what wormers to use?

You may not need to worm 4-5 times a year if your horse is not on a yard. You can use a worm count programme instead which is much better for your horse, your pocket and the environment.
If you go back to my website (link below) and look at the 'sample reduced worming programme' page there is lots of info on a good worming programme.
If you start with Pramox in Feb
worm count May, August, November, back round to Pramox in the winter. If your results are good you don't need any other wormers.
Any help needed just shout.
