Worms Count Results - To worm or not

Had worm counts done for all of mine - apparently they all have low counts (<50) so am I right in thinking I dont need to worm them just now?

The whole reason Im doing the counts is hopefully so I dont need to pump them full of chemicals if they dont need it!

I would still worm them for tapeworm if you haven't already. Think I'm correct in thinking that they don't show up on worm counts

We feed carrots and put garlic granules in feed. Don't know if it actually does anything to keep worms at bay or not or if its an old wives tale.but we don't have problems with worms. we do worm regularly aswell....bringing in time, turn out time and once each half way through the year.does that make sense?lol.anyway, we worm routinely 4 times a year.

You need a blood test for tapeworm.

No, you don't need to worm on <50 or nil counts (some would say 300&lt - but others are right that counts don't show tapeworm so you should either blood test or continue to worm twice a year (I've found wormimg cheaper than tests and am happy to use chemicals twice yearly rather than the huge amount I used before swapping to counting).

Sadly garlic and carrots do not affect worms at all but they can be kept at bay with good pasture management & care.

You would need to worm for encysted red and tapeworm at a bare minimum of once a year (but more normal to do it twice), this would normally be done in spring and autumn. If you would rather blood test for tape and this comes back clear then you would only need to worm for encysted red (Equest is good for this).

So whether you worm them now or not really depends on when they were last done and what with.

I would still worm for tapewrom. I had my boy wormed not that long ago and he was <50 as well and I didn't.

I was told by the worm count lady that ione should worm if the redworm egg count was more than 250 eggs per gram.

Tapeworm and encysted red worm are entirely different matters and don't show up on worm counts as already mentioned above.

Not this time if they are that low.

I worm count mid April, then again in September so I know whether I need just a tape or combi wormer for October. I then worm in October for tape and if required a combi wormer.

Then I worm end of December with equest for encysted red worm.

Vet said as mine don't have weight problem or colic that once a year in the autumn is fine to worm for tape and personally wouldn't recommend doing blood tests, just worm once a year. Our fields are poo picked regularly and there are only my two in the paddock so they are not high risk for tape.

I have been doing this for three years now and find that two worm counts spring and late summer, tape in autumn and equest end of December works very well for my circumstances.

I agree completely with this answer - so if you've done them with either Equest or Panacur Guard this spring for encysted small redworm, and you've tapewormed them (is that a verb lol) then you don't need to worm with such a low egg count.

I've just had my worm count done and it was clear, so I will worm now for encysted redworm and tapeworm, and not worm for the rest of the summer, will do another count in September and worm accordingly.
