I bought 2 foals at weaning in Sept 09 and when they arrived I wormed them with Equimax and left them in for a day. They had quite a bad case of worms (roundworm). So following my vets advice I re-wormed them with Equimax again 8 weeks later, they were still quite wormy. Then in Feb last year there were worms in their droppings again so I did a Panacur guard 5 day course and got the world of worms out and thought that was the end of it. However, when I wormed again 12 weeks later (can't remember what I used) there were STILL worms.
I have been following my vets advice all along, and worming very regularly with different wormers, but despite using Equest Pramox 8 weeks ago there are starting to be yet more worms in their droppings - What more can I do???
I poo pick my paddock daily, Please please can someone help me I am at the end of my tether with this!!!

Check with your vet but Id be inclined to use the Pramox again now. 8 weeks ago we were in the depths of winter and the redworms would still have been encysted. They are now feeling a bit spring like so may have started to migrate out of the gut wall. This is quite serious (presume these are what you are seeing) so be guided by your vet on this as potentially you could lose an animal if the migration is big.

Consult a specialist vet as this is not normal. My only other thought is that you are GROSSLY under dosing the youngsters? Can you get them to a weigh bridge to be certain of their weight?

We had 1 horse at our yard who just before we were about to worm (Pramox, slightly overdue, but nothing drastic) started having worms appear in his droppings. We Pramoxed and a lot of worms came out of him, but no other horse.

Then 5 weeks later, some worms began to appear again. We conulted the worming people at the local feed store AND called the vet and they said do not repeat the same wormer, and both told us to 5 day Panacur Guard.

We wormed and for the first 3 days he had worms (roundworm) coming out, then the final 2 days nothing. The vets have told us to do a worm count on him and some of the others 3-4 weeks after we finished the course (which will be in a bout 2 weeks).

Pop down to your feedstore and speak to the worming people and call your vet. We spoke to both independantly and the both said the same thing. They think that that certain horse at our yard is a bit resistant to Pramox which caused our problem,

Def speak to vet - I think it is possible to get resistance tests done.

I read around the subject a while back and understand that some yards do have a resistance problem not just to the usual wormers but also some of the newer ones.

Thank you all for advice. Have just spoken to Westgate Labs and think (HUGE fingers crossed) that we may have come up with a solution to the problem. :)

Speaking to worming advisers recently a lot of the wormers are based on the same chemical.... So although you may be using "different" wormers to help not build resistance etc, they are really not all that different.
