wormed my boy last night with ivermectin not expecting him to have any but surprise surprise redworm.
Will one wormer clear him out or should I do it again ?

Mine had redworm before I wormed her. I did her with Panacur 5 day and then 2 weeks later with Equimax (on advice from worming person at feed merchant).
3 weeks after that, I did a worm count and she was clear. I'm planning on doing another worm count end of this month to see where we're at.

it should of if you gave her the correct amount for her weight. Get i count done put i am not over sure a poo count shows redworm!

Thanks I think I will get a count done as he hasn't produced worms today. I did get some funny looks as I was probing his muck I think the kids think I have finally lost the plot !!

The two most effective wormers against encysted stages of small redworm are Moxidectin, and Panacur 5 day, the latter being slightly better, but much harder to get down them!

If I were you, I'd worm again using one of the above in August, then treat for tapeworm in Sept/Oct, then use either Moxidectin or Ivermectin in Nov/Dec to deal with bots, too.

you shouldn't need to worm again. horses will always have some sort of burden our aim is to keep it low.

Shils plan would be excellent.

If you get do a count now a >50epg count back you have ivermectin resistant worms and should sell the horse (as I was told by emminent parasitology professor (I laughed and he looked at me sternly and said he was serious) though I think meant more if you bought a new horse.)

In view of one or two replies here, may I suggest you contact a worm count lab such as Abbey Diagnostics.

I would get a worm count done BUT you will need to worm count on a regular basis as you could get a false negative - that is you have encysted small reworm - these DON'T show on counts,,, so I would count every 4 - 6 weeks to make sure your plan is working, also bear in mind that there is resistance beginning to appear to ivermectin wormers as well as pyrantel based wormers and there is 80% widespread resistance to benzimidazoles (panacur equine guard) when did you last worm your horse prior to this dose?? have you intoduced new horses to his group?? how old is he?? PM me if you wish...
