We bought our daughters pony home on Saturday & also bought a 3y/o cob for me as a companion for now but I'm planning on backing and breaking him next year. I'm really fussy about poo picking and poo pick the fields 3 times a day (morning, lunch & bedtime) last night I thought the cobs poo looked abit strange and had Orange almost seed like shapes in it, however it was very hot yesterday and there where flys everywhere. I noticed it again this morning while poo picking so I phoned the vet who said just work with a conventional wormer if I was worried. Just been back down to poo pick & had the fright of my life when I discovered a 5/6 inch long worm in his poo �� Im 90% sure it was a roundworm & it was dead, but I'm worried that he's infested. I've text his old owner to ask when he was last wormed & what with (I did ask this when I went to look at him but I can't remember what she said, but I know he's not due to be wormed)
He's in the paddock next to my pony, but I obviously need to work both of them, can anyone recommend a wormer? I've phoned the vets but the receptionist couldn't help me & said she would leave a message for a vet to call me back, but I'd like to go & get a women now �� Thanks in advance xx
 
Roundworm, generally only affects youngsters. If you look on a site like Hadrian Equine, each of the listed wormers will tell you which parasites they have been tested to eradicate. If you could find out what had been used before, then find a different active ingredient you will reduce the risk of resistance.

YOu won't need to buy from them, just use the information they supply :) Then I think you might be well advised to get a good egg count done on the pony and the cob to see what their status is. One here was supposed to have been treated before she came but she had a medium high count. I gave her a high dose of the same wormer, made sure she had it all and they were gone at the next test. You need to give 10x the normal dose for them to be toxic so there is a fair margin for error

I will egg count too but I'd like to get this dealt with swiftly. At least if I worm now, & send the samples off they can advise whether I've done enough? In 20 years of having horses I've never had one with worms so this is all very new to me!
 
We got good advice from the vet last year when 2 ponies joined the yard with uncertain worming history & we spotted a roundworm in one of their poos.

5 day panacur and then Equest Pramox.

Equest Pramox clears everything there is a risk of colic if you use it when they have a high worm burden. Panacur is gentler on their system, but there is resistance to it. It seems a bit like over kill, but we used that combination on quite a few with unknown backgrounds.
 
Be careful using pramox if I were you I would speak to your vet first better to be safe than sorry I have seen too many horses have serious reactions to pramox, I won't use it on my own horses for that reason and they are healthy and worm free.
 
What did the long worm look like? If it's pinworm, which looks very similar to roundworm, you'll need a more intensive course of worming to nuke those little gits. If I recall correctly, my vet prescribed a set of three double doses of Embotape, 2 weeks apart, followed up three weeks after the last Embotape with a double dose of something Ivermectin based, /if/ I'm recalling correctly.

5 day Panacur is good, IF you can get it in. Tried it with mine and despite eating literally everything I hide in her food (bute, antibiotics ect) and everything she shouldn't eat, she took one bite and then refused the rest for the entire 5 day course.

Also, wouldn't rely on a worm count alone, used to be a big fan until I sent a (correctly collected) sample off for a then new pony, and wormed anyway with Equest Pramox to be certain. Sample came back completely clear, what came out of the pony made my skin crawl, it was just red worms and round worms and pinworms and even a tape worm, eurgh! Appreciate a count won't detect everything, but I was genuine shocked it didn't pick up a single anything after everything that came out. Filly was only about 9 months at that time, looked considerably less bloated afterwards!
 
Ive attached a picture of it- as I couldn't quite believe it when I saw it. There's also small orange seed like things in his poo, but there's only been 1 worm.
Dropped some samples into the vets and the receptionist told me to worm with equimax until the results are back.
I don't think I've known a pony poo so much either!!
 
Looks like a roundworm to me, and fits with him being a 3 yr old. As for the seed like things, you wouldn't normally see parasite eggs with the naked eye, I would guess that is an undigested part of his food, his gut flora will still be adapting to the change

These are quite large and if You squeeze them then they ooze white goo. They are slightly bigger than papaya seeds. I've googled roundworm eggs and they come up xx

The pictures you see on the internet are microscope images - can you post a link to what you found?
 
Hello, that is a roundworm, commonly found in young horses. Most older horses develop immunity. The best wormer to use for roundworm is not ivermectin or praziquantel which treats tapeworms, both in Equimax (since when did the receptionist know about prescribing wormers?) as there is some resistance. Please ring us at Westgate Labs for help if you need it. Someone friendly and knowledgeable will chat to you. Wormers and worm counts are both important, it's not one or the other.

I'm not quite that silly as to mistake a microscope image. I can assure you that it was an actual picture & I'll get you the link x
 
I wormed them both with Equimax. The cob passed one more roundworm but it was a lot smaller & some eggs. However both are now clear, thank the lord!
