hi, my part loan pony is in a field of 4 and him and 2 others definitly have worms. The owner used the panacurr stuff but it hasnt worked, the 3 that have that deffinitely have them have been giving off signs since March, I'm getting worried now. His stomach is massive and ever since theyve been here his owner hasn't done a worm count and he's ignored us each time weve suggested one. Panacur clearly didnt work. I'm worrying thatthis boy is going to get seriously ill sometime but his owner is only wanting to do round 2 of panacur. apart from this his owner is really good with him and his needs but this is such a worry to me

im a partloaner i can't. i dont even know which vet he uses

I'd be talking to the owner in that case and encouraging they call the vet. You might have to offer to cover some of the cost but it's really important he's seen if wormer isn't working and there's physical signs of the effect they're having on him. Worms can, at worst, kill but can also cause a whole range of other serious health issues; there's a reason we worm animals and undertake preventative measures.

And you're going to have to implement a worming plan if she won't. Either that or remove yourself from the loan and find something else.

I'm aware my tone comes across as a bit harsh, it's not meant to be. I just think there's a worry that a significant worm burden can get bad quite quickly.

If the owner absolutely won't listen to you, and as an absolutely last resort, then for the sake of the pony I would worm him myself with moxidectin (Equest)and then 2 weeks later with ivermectin and praziquantel mixed (Eqvalan Duo).

This can be dangerous if there is a very high worm burden and it really should be being supervised by a vet but you're over a barrel here by the sound of it.

If an owner is unwilling to call a vet and has left it this long he should be reported. If you are part loaner you are also responsible for the wellbeing of the horse. Call your own vet! Why should the horse suffer from another's arrogance!

Send off a poo sample and if the results come back high then show them to the owner as proof that their worming system is not working with this pony.
This is a good idea. It’s cheap enough, easy to do and maybe coming from an official source the owner may take more notice. They will also then advise on how to deal with it all.
It’s not even like worming is a huge expense in comparison so I wonder why they are being so weird about it ?‍♀️
