Im competing this weekend BE 100 and am getting worried about the heat, went for a hack early this morning and my boy was dripping when I got back, had to hose down. They are stood in field now under the shade. My showjumping is about 10.30 am Sunday and cross country 11.30am can take plenty of water, but still worried :(

Any chance you can clip him between now and then?

Otherwise, lots of water, shade, rests, go easy on the warming up, i'm sure he will be fine :)

He hasnt got much of a coat, but just heard a mate has a spare stable in field next to the event, so can use that and hose him down, will be cooler than stood by the lorry :) Just hope there will be a breeze !

I would strongly recommend that if he is heavily sweating that you also give him some electrolytes, these replace the salts and minerals lost through sweating and will help him to feel less effected by this heat

^^^^^ excellent advice.

also, take as much ice as you can in a cooler box, ice blocks too, anything, and wash him down with iced water. soak and scrape, soak and scrape repeatedly to get his temp down fast. tbh though it's not that hot really, and you're only doing a BE100 so if he's reasonably fit he should be absolutely fine. just hope there's a bit of a breeze to help too.

sorry, you misunderstood me, what i meant was that because it's BE100 the xc will only be a max of about a mile or so, at a nice pace, it's not as if it is an extended distance or speed which would get him a lot hotter! i wasn't 'dissing' the level of competition, i meant that it is not very strenuous compared to the higher levels!

I was thinking it was bloody roasting as I was riding yesterday and the day before and then thought, "Christ, I've gone soft." Back in the US we would ride in 90+ degree F weather (that would be about 32 C) and not think anything of it. We'd give the horses a normal workout, hose them off when done, and never had any heat related issues. Yesterday it was about 22 C (71 F), a temperature I used to see as an *incredibly* cool summer or spring day and there was me thinking it was hot. How sad.

I think it's that we've gone from monsoons and the horses wearing their medium weight rugs to combat the chill factor to blazing sunshine in a matter of days that is making it so much harder for them (and us) to cope. Mine still have their "in-between" coats and are much sweatier than they would usually be in these sort of temperatures.

Good luck with the event on Sunday - post competition report and pics are always appreciated :)

yes, it's all relative, a couple of days ago it was chuffing freezing here, getting down to almost zero overnight, biting wind... we've had no time to acclimatise. my horses are still in MW rugs overnight then i have to whip them off fast before the sun gets any heat in it!

Will try and get some photos taken, but putting them on here is another matter, dont know how to do it How sad told you I was old !! lol :)

If you can do a BE100 you can manage photobucket, honestly - even I managed it and I am hopeless at following written instructions, I always prefer to be shown.

First you go to http://photobucket.com/

Then you set up an account (they don't spam you).

Then you click the "upload" green button.

Another green button "select photos and videos" will appear - click that.

Search for where you have saved the photo on your computer and then select (my computer has a button saying "open").

When it says "upload complete" go to view album on the photobucket site and hover over the picture you want. You can choose direct link to paste a link to the photo or the IMG code. I usually choose the direct link option because I [still] don't know how to resize photos so they come out massive.

Then right click (or Ctrl V) the link here. I think you might recognise this chap http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l601/suziq77ponies/Horse_Westpoint_Ragazzoni-big.jpg

That's also normal weather for Colorado -- LOL. Not infrequently we'd get a spate of 70 degree weather in March or Feb, when the horses were all still very furry, and then the next week, snow.

I PM'd you a while ago as I'd found an old thread about Westpoint Raggazoni offspring, here's my girl on her first outing of 2012 http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l601/suziq77ponies/DSCF1886.jpg

and what she looks like at the moment (going to a show tomorrow so it's going to be bathtime tonight) http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l601/suziq77ponies/Stains.jpg
