[TD="class: msgtxt"]My horse was in the care of someone else for a long time. I just got him back a few months ago, very thin. First he wouldn't eat, and I figured, he was excited about being in pasture with grass and other horses..he never had it before, but after a month he still didn't want to eat, just picked at his food. I figured he stomache shrunk from non having enough food.
After 2 months I started to get a little concerned as he wasn't picking up a lot of weight although did some. I have always been able to put on a lot of weight with in 2 months of my rescues. Now he has been separated to his own pasture and free fed. He gets more than enough food. He has started to regain weigh and is eating now. He gets more than just hay but pellets beet pulp and grain.
He started to pick up weight and I was hopeful but he still wasn't himself. He just doesn't have that spark that he used to. He acts like a 30yr horse and hes only 16. As soon as he picks up weight is seems to come off him again.
I had started to worry about and underlying illness as he just doesn't seem to be bouncing back. Today He acted like he was have a seizure or some neurological problem. His head hung down and his eye were closing and he was buckling his front to legs like he was going to lay but it wasn't the way they do for colic now was. He has never done this before. I am worried now.
After this Im thinking about all the other problems that were just isolated but can also be neurological. He drops a lot of food when he eats, first I thought teeth but now, I read it can also be neurological. He always has his mouth a little open with his tongue sort of sticking out, not really out but low and visible if you look at him. He has poor muscle tone despite being exercised regularly and give excess amounts of food. I've noticed the last week he's been doing this circling thing but I just figured he was looking for his grain. It's just weird behavior of him.
He also seems to be week in his hind but I just figured he needed to gain some muscle and get back into shape but I read that can also be an underlying problem. He was a show jumper and could do flying lead changes and now he can't seem to perform them. First I figures he was just weak buy now, im starting to worry that it may be a coordination problem.
I don't know if Im just being paranoid but after the incident today, I really feel this is more than just needed food.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be. Does it sound like a neurological issue or something else?
