I've owned my horse for just over a year, but have made the decision to sell him. He is currently at my instructors yard being schooled 5 days a week in prep for sale and doing really well. Unfortunately he just turned out to be a little too much for me, in terms of size, he is 16.3 and I just never felt I could ride him effectively as I am lightweight and he is stubborn. Also he was quite underweight when I bought him and as he filled out, he became cheekier. He also changed in personality from a baby, wouldn't say boo to a goose 5 yr old to a cocky 6 yr old with loads of attitude! To be quite honest we just never really clicked.

Anyway it's been a really difficult year with him and we've had loads of downs and not many ups. I really would love to get something else once I've sold him but I'm terrified of ending up with something else unsuitable. I am an experienced rider but lacking confidence so although I don't want anything that will take the p1ss, I fear I would get bored with a kick along plod. I have been looking at connemaras recently and I know some can be rather testing and quirky but on the whole, would this be a good breed for me to consider? I really want a fab allrounder that I can go out and compete and have fun with and something that would make me love riding again! I keep looking at Prestwood farm as theirs are just stunning but they are mostly 5 yr olds and I really don't want to make the same mistake of buying a youngster that I can't cope with again. Although I think with my lad, in the end he was using his size against me so maybe I would cope fine with a 14.2 connie!?

I just want to find my forever horse and I just don't think I could go through this heartache again

Sorry that ended up being very long...... Terrys chocolate orange for getting this far

it sounds like you have made the right decision for the right reasons.Owning a horse is meant to be fun and not something that makes you stressed and scared. I would say that if you are looking to buy a connie in particular then perhaps try to get one of around 7 or 8 as all 5 and 6 year olds of all breeds go through the phase of testing their riders to see what they can get away with. They are basically much the same as the typical teenage human.

You're right, I'm not going for anything under 7 this time, regardless of height or breed! Has anyone else found that the period of them being 5-6 was very difficult?

I agree get something older next time and more your size. Although saying that mine is 10 and still acting like a stroppy teenager! Ive had him a year and we're still working each other out. Sometimes we click perfect, sometimes we dont, we are both very opinionated so its not been easy :D Have you tried Avril at Equine Agents? They have a variety of horses and all different ages, not just youngsters. Good luck with finding your forever horse :)

I have a lovely 14.2 for sale.....undersized racehorse, but will do what ever anyone wants him to do, because he is so willing and experinced for his young age (5 years) because he has raced. Sadly far too many people over horse themselves.
