Self indulgent post really just feel upset and worried. My mare has had some foot problems arthritis and slightly rotated pedal bone plus small keratoma in a front hoof and for the last year has been managed well doing light hacking has special heart bar shoe and danelon and arthritis supplement. When I last rode her( before the snow) she was really good and full of herself feeling great.
During the snow she managed to rip off the hearbar and cause severe brusing .The ground has been frozen and really hard.
Next she got an abcess on that same foot that just kept running under the sole she was treated by the vet and the farrier visited twice a week for 3 /4 weeks,
Last week things looked better though still not sound (farrier thought foot needed time to settle after all the trauma) abcess had cleared so foot was fitted with a leather pad .
A week later she has not improved at all if anything slightly worse and looks really sore I am having terrible problems with dirt balling up in the foot due to the heart bar and I just feel desperate as if anything she looks worse again today. She is grazing eating rolling and general not showing distrees other than fairly lame .
I have got the vet coming first thing monday with mobile xray unit.
I am just worried it is going to be something awful( fractured pedal bone? further dropping of pedal bone ? keratoma increased in size?).
I am so fond of her had her 18 years can't bear the thought of loosing her but wonder how fair it is to keep her like this !!! She is slightly better mouching around the field with the others she would not tolerate being stabled without them she would charge around the stable causing more damage to her foot.
Just rambling really hope monday finds some resolution.
She is T/B aged 20

Poor you, I just wanted to say that I hope all is ok and that it is nothing serious on Monday (maybe just bruising - fingers crossed) that is no help at all I know but - good luck :)

Hope things go well for you tomorrow. I had exactly the same scenario with my pony in January. He had an abscess, was not improving even after it had been drained, and also has pedal bone rotation. I was really worried the mobile X-ray would show more rotation but the problem was another abscess high up inside the hoof. He is still not 100% sound, but is off Danilon and a lot happier. He seems better for being turned out than being kept in. I guess it's better for their circulation and their state of mind. Good luck. XX

Vet came monday lots of xrays .Results are the keratoma is larger, radiography shows no fractures and acceptable pedal bone positon.
Abcess is cleared up .
She is showing a fair amount of arthritic change to coffin joint and navicular busae area.
He has recomended medicating both areas with hyluronic acid and depo steroid injected into the joints to give relief .
I have had this done .
It is unlikely she will ever be rideable but may be field sound . I intend to give her a lovely summer at grass and re assess at the start of the winter
He had been out and done this.
Any improvement should be noticeable in 5/7 days so if it has worked I will know in a week or so .
If there is no improvement sadly I will make the decision to let her go.
I have given her every chance to have a lovely summer in retirement we will just have to see .
I feel a bit numb really but at least I know .
