Having moved to a new livery yard (costs caused me to move from old yard which was perfect) I really don't like it, we've been there 2 months and my darling horse is in a small paddock on his own and never moves from the gate, his grazing is very poor now, I put him a large haynet up at the gate which he eats every day..I'm supposed to be on full livery but I'm having to go daily to do all the jobs the YO's don't do, stand and graze him in hand an hr a day, clean feed buckets, put haynet in field, clean water buckets in field and top up, top up stable haynet, tidy stable..I feel I let them pull the wool over my eyes.. The only other alternative I have in my area is to go DIY..How do you all cope? I know I would save a bundle in £££ as he could live out until the end of Autumn..I feel sick with the worry of it all, even considering selling him !

Have you even tried discussing your concerns with YO? They wont change if they don't know what is worrying you. If they wont change then go DIY. Often find people in yard who will help with jobs for what you would pay in livery.

It sounds like you are already doing a lot anyhow, I have never been full livery, are you not meant to be able to not visit and its all done, no worries. Why don't you look for a part livery, that is if you can not do DIY.

From what you have said you are virtually on DIY now as you are still doing all of the jobs/work that you are paying somebody else to do.
DIY is great once you get into the hang of things, the best order to do your jobs in etc but thats mainly only a winter issue if your horse can live out in the summer!
I would move to DIY. Now is the best time as you can get used to the new place before winter arrives.

I would not be paying full/part livery prices if you are doing all of the work and you and your horse clearly aren't happy there so I would move.

Good luck! :)

How much were you paying before and how much do you pay now? Sounds as though you are almost doing DIY as it is!

Firstly you are paying for full livery and still having to do jobs.

I think you need to clarify what your new yard considers included in the full livery price. It sounds like a difference in opinion on what should be done. Do you have a contract? If not discuss what you consider full livery and what you expect, and see if a comprimise can be reached.

They might not be doing the jobs because you keep turning up to do them!?!

If they are unwilling to negotiate and you don't trust them to do as you've asked, then move to DIY because clearly you are nearly doing the same work as someone on DIY. Alot of people on DIY yards usually end up helping each other out. At my last yard, i used to turn out in the morning and a friend would bring in later on, to save either having to go out or be left on their own.

I was paying £75 per week + extras and now paying £60 all in
No part Livery nr me..DIY only & is £25 incl use of arena and a stable. (straw provided too)

Looking after my friends 3 horses for 2 weeks who are on grass livery, so will see how I cope LOL Might smuggle my boy in with them!

What do others at the yard think of the service, is this a particular problem with your horse for some reason or generally a lack of attention to detail from the YO?

How much is this yard compared to others in the area? You generally get what you pay for so if you moved from a top end (cost and service) yard to a basic/ value end yard then it's not totally unexpected that standards are different.

You could go DIY but with all the time and extras I suspect it's almost as much as full livery - just you have more control. Alternatively you could go back to the more expensive yard that you were happy with.

£60 is very very cheap. I am not surprised you are experiencing a lack of service. £75 plus extras is actually very reasonable for full livery. I hope that you get sorted.

I agree with this if DIY is £25, that only leaves £35 for hay, hard feed, and all their time. Hay could easily be half a bale a day on average - so £10-15 a week so you've got £20 a week (£2.90 a day) for their time - at minimum wage that is only half an hour so mucking out, turning out etc in that little time doesn't leave time for the sorts of things you've mentioned.
