Worrying effect of fly cream!!

What exactly do they put in fly creams?

I dropped a tub of Nettex fly cream on the ground during the week and where the fly cream landed the grass is now burnt and dead!!

Worried me about what effect it is having on my horses as had put some of it on the outside of my boys sheath to protect him from flies. His sheath has now swollen up and wondered if this stuff is not too good for their skin??!!
 
It sounds like it contains DEET. It is a very strong insecticide which can cause skin reactions and the fumes should not be inhaled. Stop using it at once and the skin reaction will get better.

The more DEET in the flyspray the more potential for skin reactions etc there is - be careful when using it near fabrics as it will make anything other than 100% cotton disintegrate. Has solvent like properties and is a harsh chemical. I will only use if travelling in a high malaria area (E.Africa etc)

I have used Nettex itch stop salve, for last 2 summers and put loads on everywhere every day, right up to his eyes and even "accidentally" got a tiny bit in one of his eyes, no reaction, use it in his ears sheath, everywhere, not had any reactions up to now, maybe the fly cream has different ingredients, the itch stop works great against flying things, maybe you would be better using that.
 
Have stopped using it after noticing the state of the grass where is landed cos worrying that it has had such a bad effect and on his sensitive bits too, poor lad !!!!!!

Makes you wonder what effect these have on us too as can't help but inhale the sprays when you are spraying your ned!!!

It is quite possible. I used DEET only when I had to when I was in Africa for 4 months - absolutely hate it. Certainly wuldn't use here on me or my horses, as I said will only use it in malaria areas and then only sparingly - it is vile nasty stuff and should be used with care!!

Seriously try to stand away from the direction of the spray as the fumes are an irritant to your respiratory system.
 
OMG ! my ned had a massive reaction to the Nettex fly spray while ago, now i know why! i use the naf natural pink spray now with no problems.
 
I had the vet out to my horse using the Net-Tex fly spray last week, it has burnt my horse bad, as in her skin was comming off, have written to Net-Tex about this, I done a skin sample and waitted 48 hrs and all was good, the burns are her chest, neck and other areas. I have used many fly sprays over the years on the same horse and all but Net-Tex has been fine... not happy

i tie old socks around my horses fetlocks an drop some citronella oil on the socks and the smell drifts up and everywhere you can smell my horses a mile off. Thankfully the flies seem to be able to smell it as well as i dont have a fly prob on any of them
 
I don't use any fly creams or sprays on my horse, she is very sensitive skinned and so many products now contain tea tree and this can act as an invigorator to horses prone to sarcoids, (which my horse sometimes gets)
My vet warned me off all these products years ago. he said that the amount of tea tree put in everything for horses nowadays is ridiculous.

The fly sprays and creams are all now so strong that lots of horses will have very bad adverse reactions, so mine come in during the day and have fly rugs on, public demand for fly sprays that work makes the manufacturers use stronger and stronger stuff, not good for our horseys.
